DAVID s. WILLIAMS, OETOETLAND, OREGON.
SWIVEL-FRAME Eon EAzoE-sTEoPs.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known Athat I,`DAvID S. WILLIAMS, citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Frames for RaZor-Strops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention,lsuch as will enable others skilledjin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in swivel frames for razor strops; and it comprehends, briefly the provision of a device of the general class or character indicated, which possesses the triple advantage of being applicable with equalfacility to strops of widely differing thicknesses, of holding the strop, irrespective of its thickness, constantly in the same position and preventing it 'from swaying sidewise, and of enabling the interchangeable use of swivel rings or hooks of various types. Y With the above and other objects in view, the improved device, as preferably constructed, comprises a frame' proper which consists of a pair 'of companion 'parts or members having lateral flanges whicheverlie each other so as to form a lap joint, and which fitl squarely against the endy face of the strop. These tWo members are detachably clamped togetherv by a bolt or screw, and
their overlapping flange portions are provided with mating transverse recesses which open through the free edges thereof 'and unite in forming a slot or opening in which the stem of the swivel is engaged and is' held in place thereby, the arrangement'being such that the width of the overlap and, hence, the length of the 'slot or "opening, will vary in accordance with the thiclmess of the strop. j
' An embodiment 0f the invention is illustrated in the a-ccompanying drawing, where- 1n:
Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective view of a strop equippedv with the improved swivel frame;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view thereof on av slightly larger scale;
Fig. 3 is a collective view, showing the several parts of the framey disassembled; and
Fig. 4 shows, by Way of eXample,a type of swivel which may be used in place of the one represented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
I Specification of Letters'latent. Patented Sept, 16, 19] 9 Application filed December 27, 1918. Serial No. i
While the drawing discloses a 'form of the invention which may be regarded for all present purposes as preferred, it is to be understood that no limitation to the precise structural details comprised: insuch disclosure is contemplated, since modifications and changes in the construction and arrangement of the component parts of the invention may well vbe made within vthe scope of the invention as subsequently claimed. v
The strop 1 may be of any approved character, and may consist of any suitable number of sections or members, two of which areV represented in the present instance, designated by the numerals 2, 3. These sections V(or, in the case of astrop comprising a single section or member, such member itself) may have any desired thickness, thereby varying the total thickness of the strop, as will b e understood; but in any event, Ythe strop, whether single or multiplex, will have a fiat end face, and will be provided adjacent said face with a transversehole 4:.
The frame 5 comprises a pair of counterpart members 6 and 7, each of which consists of a sheet metal plate having itsupper edge bent to form an inwardly-directed, lateral flange 8 or 9. These flanges are provided, in turn, with centrally-located, transverse recesses 10 and 11,'which open throughvthe free edges. thereof; and the body of one member, in the present instance the member 6, is provided with a central aperture l2 of circular outline, while that of the other member 7 is formed with a rec-- tangular aperture 13. The upper end of the strop is `designed to fit between the two frame members 6 and 7, the flanges of which project toward and overlap each other, so that the frame as a .whole may be said toI have the shape of an inverted U in Cross-section, with the base 'of the U formed bythe slidably related, overlapping Hanges. The recesses 10 and 11 register with each other at thistime, and unite in producing a single,l transverse slot, whose length depends upon the extent of the overlap of the 'anges or, in other words, upon the thickness of the v strop, the arrangement being such that the slot isclosed at one end by the inner end of the recess 11 and at the other end by the inner end of the recess 10. The apertures 12 and 13 register at the same time with the adjacent ends of the hole et, in order to permit the passage ot a clamping screw or bolt 14 therethrough, said screw being inserted through the circular aperture 12 in the member 6 and projecting into the threaded bore of a cap or nut 15, the rectangular shank of which fits in the similarly-shaped aper ture 13 in the member 7.
The swiveled attaching element- 16 is removably connected to the frame, and may have any desired construction or shape. It may be .of the type shown in Fig. 3, or of any other .preferred type; `tor example, it maybe constituted by the .S-shaped member 17 illustrated in Fig. 4. It will embody in any instance, however, a stein or stud 18, which is headed at opposite ends, as indicated at 19 and Q0, and which lits loosely in an opening provided for it -in the base of the ring or equivalent member. The stud 18 fits in the slot formed by the mating recesses in the flanges 8 and 9, being positioned in the recess in the flange 8 prior .to the-coupling of the two members together. The lower head 20 of the stud is thus clamped between the under flange 8 and theend face or the strop, and it preferably tits in a seat 21 formed inthe strop end for the pur ose of enabling the under :flange to abut dlirectly and squarely against the surface of the strop and throughout its entire extent.
In the form of attaching element represented lin Fig, 3, there are comprised two opposed, arc-shaped arms 22, which are .pivoted in a carrier yoke 23, the :latter being formed with ythe opening in which the stem or stud 18 is engaged. The arms 22 taper slightly, and are arranged side by side in such a manner as to bind somewhat during their movement past each other into closed position, thus insuring their retention in that position.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the frame may be readily adjusted t0 lit strops of appreciably different thicknesses, and that irrespective of its thickness, the strop will be prevented from swaying edgewise, dueto the abutting engagement which exists between its en d face and the top of the frame, or, more precisely, between its end Jface and the under face of the lower flangel 8. Also, it will be understood that any one of a. number of diterent types of swivels may `be interchangeably applied to the frame, according to the shape and size of the support rom which the strop is to be suspended, and vthat the removal and interchange of swivels may be quickly and easily effected,
