SIGN-BOARD.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sign-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to means for securing paper signs and like sheets in position on a holding-board or frame, and the primary object is to provide a structure, which will effectively clamp the sheet in position and yet will permit its COIlVGlliQlll removal whenever desired for the purpose of changing the sign.

The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the same, showing one margin of a sheet clamped and the other margin free. Fig. 2 is a detail end view on an enlarged scale, illustrating one of the clamping strips in its operative position. Fig. 8 is a similar view, but illustrating the clamping strip released.

Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the embodiment disclosed, a suitable back 4 is employed having an end strip 5 and side-holding strips 6 secured to the back, the side-holding strips 6 having their inner portions cut away so that the inner sides overhang the back in spaced relation thereto, forming tapered seats 7. Cooperating with each side strip is a clamping strip 8 that is preferably triangular in cross section and is arranged to fit snugly in the seat 7 between the overhanging portion of the strip 6 and the back. In order to secure the clamping strip in. the seats, holding devices are employed that are in the form of wire yokes having their central portions 9 ournaled transversely in the holding strips 6 and having oflset terminal and inwardly curved retaining arms 10 that preferably terminate in coils 11. The outer of these arms are arranged to bear against the outer sides of the holding strips 6, while the inner arms yieldingly bear against the inner sides of the clamping strips when said strips are in the seats, as illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be evident that any number of the holding devices may be employed, depending upon the length of the sign.

It is believed that the manner of using the device will be clear by reference to Fig. 1. The sheet to be held is placed upon the back 4, and the margins are doubled in the seats 7. The clamping strips are then engaged with the doubled margins and the holding devices are turned, so that the arms will engage against the inner sides of the clamping strips. These arms being yielding, force the triangular strips 8 into clamping relation with the side strips 6, and thus effectively hold the paper in the frame or body of the sign. The sheet can at any time be removed by partially rotating the holding devices and removing the clamping strips, whereupon said sheet can be detached and a new one placed in position.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a holding strip, of a clamping strip movable into interfitting relation therewith to clamp a sheet between them, and a keeper yoke journaled on one strip and having terminal olfset arms, one of which engages the rear side of the strip on which it is journaled, the other engaging over the opposite side of the other strip.

2. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a back, of side-holding strips carried thereby and having inner sides that overhang the back, detachable clamping strips that fit between the overhanging portions of the side strips and back and cooperate with said side strips to clamp opposite margins of a sheet placed against the back, and means for detachably securing the clamping strips in position.

3. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a back and holding strips carried thereby and having their inner sides overhanging the back, of substantially triangular clamping strips that fit between the overhanging portions and the back and In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
