UNITED STATES HIRAM G. DISBROW', OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLAMP.
Application led September =24, 1927.
This invention relates to clamps, and has for an object to provide an improved clamp designed to clamp a plurality of independent sheets so as to hold them iirmly in register,
while being cut or otherwise treated.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved clamp, wherein a few or a great numberof sheets may be inserted, prop erly adjusted, and then clamped rigidly against shifting without injury.
A further object, more specically, is to provide a clamp for coupon bonds or other papers, wherein large parallel surfaces are used to present clamping jaws, together with means for shitting the surfaces to a clamping or to an unclamping posit-ion.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clamp disclosing an embodiment of the invention,
the same being shown in use. I
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the clamp shown in Figure 1, a supply of paper being shown in clamped position.
Figure 3 is a sectional View through Figure 2, substantially on line 33.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a batch of leaves which have been indicated as coupons attached to bonds. In order that a plurality of these bonds may be properly held together so that the coupons from all the bonds may be cut at the same time, a clamp 2 is provided which is supplied with a separate or removable key 3 whereby the clamp may be moved into clamping action or operated so as to be removed from the sheets 1. The clamp 2 is provided with a body 4 substantially U- shaped in cross section as shown in Figure 2,
said Ul-shaped structure including a back wall 5, a top plate 6 and a bottom plate 7. A clamping plate 8 substantially of the same size and shape as the bottom plate 7, is arranged within the body as shown in Figures 2 and 3 and acts to clamp the articles 1. The clamping plate 8 is preferably provided with bent down ribs 9 and 10 whereby spaced pressing points are presented. The rear edge of the plate 8 is bent up for forming a supporting and guide band 11 which is provided with turned over ears 12 and 13, said ears extending through a retaining strap 14. The strap 14 is not clamped tightly to the back wall 5, but is loosely mounted thereon so that the plate 8 may slide up and down according to the thickness of the article to be clamped and Serial No. 221,736.
according to the action ot' the clamping screw 15. This screw is externally threaded and provided with a socket 16 designed to receive the key 3, which key may be removed at any time. A reinforcing and thickening disk 17 is welded, soldered or otherwise secured to the top plate 6 and internally threaded whereby a comparatively long threaded support is provided tor the screw 15.
When in use, the screw 15 is unscrcwed to an appreciable extent and plate 8 elevated. flhe device is then placed on the article 1 or any other article and then screw 15 is operated for forcing the clanfiping plate 8 tightly against the article whereby the article is pressed by plate 8 and presses against the bottom plate 7. To remove article 1, screw 15 is loosened somewhat and then the article may be removed, or rather the clamp may be removed from the article.
The device may be used for many purposes, but is particularly adapted for holding in proper registry coupon bearing bonds. In linancial institutions, many bonds are held in safe keeping for customers. Coupons must be cut as a rule, twice a year. The present method is to use an angular cutter which tears one coupon at a time. By using the clamp embodying the invention, the bonds are held in perfect registry and by the use of a machine provided with an angular knife, an entire block ot' il'ty or more may be cut at a single operation. By providing accuracy in cutting from the bonds, the appearance of the bonds is better, and also the appearance of the coupons cut. The bonds being held in such manner, are kept in safer and better condition.
Vhat I claim is 1. A clamp of the character described, comprising a flat upper plate and a flat lower plate, means for permanently connecting said plates along one edge, a clamping plate arranged intermediate said first mentioned plates, a guiding bar for guiding said clamping plate on the connecting means as it moves between the first two mentioned plates, means at the ends of said clamping plate for securing the guiding bar to the clamping plate, and a screw member for moving said clamping plate in one direction.
2. A clamp of the character described, comprising a sheet metal body formed with a top plate, a bottom plate and a back wall, a clamping plate arranged between said top plate and bottom plate, said clamping plate having 011e edge turned up for forming a guiding flange, said Harige at the ends being bent ovei` for forming retaining clips, a guiding bar arranged exteriorly of said back Wall and interloeked with said clips whereby said clamping plate is slidingly mounted on said back Wall, and a screw member carried by said tgp plate for forcing said clamping plate toward said bottom plate.
Signed at New York in the county of New 10 York and State of New York this 22nd day of September, 1927.
