DESK FILE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. HI'sLor, a
I citizen of Canada, and a resident of Newark,
in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Desk File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to files and particularly to an improved construction which will readily adapt itself to a desk or a file cabinet for convenient use in adrawer, a shelf or other place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a file in whichafoundation plate is used associated with a plurality of easily adjusted division plates capable of easy movement to any desired place whereby the space above the base plate may be; divided as required' A further obj ect ofthe invention is to provide a desk file inwhich the'parts may be readily set and taken down and will occupy a mmimum space when either in an operative positionorin a collapsed position." A still further'object of the invention is to provide a desk file having a plurality of easily adjustable" compartments, the arrange ment being such that the partition members or removed easily at any time. i In the accompanying'drawingsv Figure 1 isf'a perspective view 'of a file v disclosing. one embodimentof the invention,
certain parts being broken away.
Figure 1 is a detail fragmentary perspective showing one end of the label holder illustrated in Figure'l'. A
Figure 2 is a top plan view of part of the structure shown in'Fi'gure 1. H r i V Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, through Figure 2 approximately on line 231 a,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view I through Figure2 online 3f3. 1
Figure 4 is a view similar toFigure 3 but showing'the end plate removed.
. Figure 5 is a fragmentary viewshowing a front elevation of the structure illustrated in Figure 3.

flanges 2 (Figs. 3 and 4:) are one or more re: taming members 5 'whichare 1n the ferni of rivets, sa d rivets being longerthan necessary gether.v The difference being-takenup by'fla spring washer 7 which iscompressed when the end plate 8 is inserted as shown inIFi'g ure 3. This end plate is 'providedwith' a slot less number could be used without departing fromthe spirit ofthe'invention.

If desired, a; single fiat strip could be used against the flange 2 instead of the or otherwise covered and the end members 8 6o tic'ularly adapted foruse ona desk. By providing the springfiwasher 7 andassociated parts the end plates 8 may be quickly applied or quickly removed as occasion may demand without the use of tools or any manually operated means.
In order to provide proper compartments between the end plates 8 a number or" partitions 11 are provided which are preferably formed from sheet metal and or the same size as the end plates 8. In order to hold these division plates 11 in any desired place between the ends of the base 1, the member 12' which may be termed a foot, is rigidly secured to the lower edge of each of the division plates 11 and lit flat-wise against the baself These toot members'may be welded, riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the division plates 11. At the time when the members 12are fastened to the plates 11, resilient hooks 13, are arranged at each end thereof as shown in Figure 2, the section 13 being rigidly clamped in place while the opposite or hook end 13 resiliently grips the a fiat base, a plurality of adjustable division edges. of the basel. The base 1 is provided atone endwith small notches 1 1 for admit-e ting the hooks 13 while the opposite end may be provided preferably with one large notch 15 whereby one of the hooks. 13 may he slipped over oneedge of base 1 and the other hook passed directly through the notch 15 and then the division plate slid along the base 1 to the desired position. When the small notches 1 1 are used the end plate-8 must be removed before the division plates 11-can be placed onthe base l'whereas by the use ofthe notch 15 it is not neces' sary to remove the end plates as the division plates may be readily placed in position at any time. 7
lVhere the device is to be used in a drawer of a cabinet or on a'shel-f, the cardholder 4 and member 6 and associated partsare eliminated and a base '16 is provided which consists merely of a fiat sheet of metal having a plurality of supporting legswhich may be in the. form of turned over extensions 17 whereby the body of the plates 16 is supported above the bottomot the drawer a suflicient distance to allow the passage of the hooks 13 on the division plates 11. If desired a notch 15 can be provided at any desired point in plate 16 so that the plate could fit the drawer or the shelf and yet division plates could be added or removed at any time according to the circumstances. I
A large number of slight changes and variations could be provided without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention while utilizing the sliding feature and the automatic locking of the division plates in any adjusted position.
WVhat I claim is: v s I 1. In a file of the character described a flat base provided with supporting means and formed with a'notch therein and a division member formedwith a foot section adapted to engage the base fiat-wise and with a pair of hooks adapted to overlap the edges of the base, one of said hooks being movable through said notchand move to a position opposite the same for application or removal.
2.1x desk file of the character described comprising a fiat base formed with a pair of turned down ends, a plurality of adjustable division members arranged on said base, an end plate for each'end of said base and-resilient means for. clamping said end plates in position.
3. In a desk file of the character described members arranged on said base, a plurality of headed plns extend ng from each end of said base, clamping. plate loosely mounted on said pins, a spring member arranged be---' tween the heads of said pins and the respective plates for resiliently clamping the plates against the ends of said base and an end plate for each end of the base, each of said end plates being formed with notches whereby the end plates may be forced between saidclamping plates and the end of the base plate with the notches-straddling the pins.
a. A desk'file of the character described comprising a flat base formed with a-pair of 7 JOHN G. nrsLo PQ
