To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. FREDERICK E. BLon- GETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to safety razors of the type in which a removable blade is detachably clamped when in use, the objects of the invention among others being to pro.- vide for clamping the bladesecurely and fixedly to its seat in a predetermined relation to the guard; to enable aflat single edged blade to be held and employed 'in a superior manner; to provide for the simple application and removal of the blade; to enable the blade to be clamped without bending and in such manner as to maintain it entirely free from the guard or comb; and generally to improve and simplify the construction of the device as a whole.

With these ends in view my invention consists' of variousimproved features of construction in the form and arrangement of parts which will be fully pointed out in the specification.

I will first describe a form of razor embodying my improvements and will then set fort-h the novel features thereof in the claim.

Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the blade and all of the clamping parts in substantially the relation that they will have when in use, save that for the purposes of illustration they have been slightly separated. Fig. 2 is a face view of the top plate engaged by a blade. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section of the assembled razor.

Similar letters of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in the several figures.

A represents a form of blade suitable for use in the present improvements, this being shown as of a fiat form and as having only one of the long edges sharpened, the other long edge .constituting the back edge a of the blade;

a is an aperture arranged substantially central in the blade for a purpose that will hereinafter a pear.

On either side of the blade and clamping the same fiatwise between them, are two plates B and C. The uppermost of these Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Feb. 13, 1912 plates in the drawings may be termed the holder plate B and the lower termed the guard plate C, both of them being substantially fiat with the exceptions of the lugs and guard to be hereinafter referred to.

As a means of holding all of the parts together into a rigid whole, a clamping means is employed'in the form of a clamping screw which also constitutes a center lug I) located plate may be' r D represents a handle, having its end (1 threaded interiorly to cooperate with the clamping screw so that the handle maybe applied and turned tightly into such position as to clamp all/of. the four described parts tightly together.

In order to properly justify the blade and hold it in its position, I employ means located on one of the two plates B and C,

preferably on the holder plate B, of suchnature as to engage. with the blade at three points not in a straight line but constituting V the three corners of a triangle. One of these points of engagement is that already referred to, afforded by the center lug cooperating With the center hole in the blade. The other two. points which are most clearly seen in Fig. 2, are a pair of lugs at the side or near the corner farthest from the cutting edge of the blade said lugs being formed on one of the two plates, preferably the holder plate B, and the lugs being indicated on the drawings by the-letters b, 6 From Fig. 2- it will be seen that the blade when adjusted on the center lug slips down into place with its rear or unshar ened edge in abutment against the lugs 12, 12 thus affording three points of contact or adjustment which accurately determine the position of the blade and thereby insure its cut ting edge having proper relation to the guard hereinafter to be referred to.

On the guard plate 0 is a guard c in the form of a comb which is somewhat curved away from the sharp edge of the blade A so as to leave the blade edge free from any contact with or pressure by the guard, this being a decided advantage in that the cutting capacity of the blade is not in any way interfered with by the guard and the guard takes no part in the clamping of the blade in lace.

From the above description it will be seen that avery simple and efiicient safety razor is afforded, it consisting merely of three parts in addition .to the blade, and so related as to not only very accurately justify the blade, but also to tightly clamp it flatwise beyond the possibility of displacement in its proper position and in exact predetermined relation to the guard or comb; the most approved relation of the blade and the plates between which it is clamped to the handle, is afforded; and the entire structure is inexpensive and at the same time durable.

The threaded handle D may be considered as a locking device or locking handle since when the other three members are in position it may be screwed upon the lug for locking the parts in proper relative positions with the blade accurately clamped in exact relation to the guard.

While in the accompanying drawings 1 emma have shown my invention embodied in the form which I prefer to adopt and which in practice has been found to answer the ends to be attained, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to such details as are shown, nor to any particular .form or relation of the parts except in so far as such limitations to form or'relation are specified in the appended claim.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:

In a safety razor, the combination of a flat, single-edged, apertured blade, a fiat holder plate, a flat guard plate, means for positioning said blade with respect to said plates, a threaded locking handle for locking the three, and a guard or comb on said guard plate; said positioning means comprisin a pair of lugs engaging the blade backe ge and a threaded lug engaging the blade aperture, said threaded lug adapted to be engaged by said locking handle.
