Description

l. l. SNIGO.
RECEPTACLE.
APPLicAnoNr1LD1u1v111.1916. RENEwED 11111. 11.1919.
Patented Sept. 9, 41919.
INVENTOR JAMES .'r. smeo, orrrrrsnunen, rENnsYLvANIA.
RECEPTACLE.
Application filed July 1s, 1916, sei-mino. 109,967.
To all whom t ma concern.'
Be it known tiiat IJAMns J'.V SNIeo, a citizen of the United States, residin at Iittsburgh, countl of Allegheny, and `btatc of Pennsylvania, Viave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles, particularly to ice `cream cans, and `primarily in connection with the lid or cover for the receptacle, and has for its object to provide a cover, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby the lid or cover can be detachably connected with the can body to enable the `can to be transported from place to place by gripping the cover.
Further objects'of the invention are to provide a receptacle for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and unusually convenient in its use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an elevation, broken away, of a receptacle in accordance with this invention showing a lid or cover spaced from the body of the receptacle.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view with the lid or cover spaced from the body portion.
Fig. 3 is a top plan, broken away, of a lid or cover.
Fig. t is an elevation of the lid or -cover coupling members.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sectional details of modified forms of can bodies.
By way of example, the adaptation of the invention is illustrated as in accordance with an ice cream can, but it is to be understood that the invention applies to a milk can, or cans for storing or receiving any fluids or solids.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings 1 denotes the cylindrical body portion of the can, 2 a reinforcing collar which is Specification of Letters Patent.

Renewed January 17, 1919. Serial No. 271,754.
formed by bending the marginal portions 1 1 of the `can body outwardly to `snugly surround the same. The "collar 2 lis formed with a bead 3 and fixedly secured tothe can body 1, as well as extending through the collar 2, is a pair of oppositely extending and diametrically opposed `studs or lugs t.
The reference character 5 denotes a lid or coverwhich has fixedly secured there with, upon the top thereof, a handle 6. lid forcover 5 includes a rim 6a. 1 i
` Secured to the periphery of the rim 6, is `a pair of oppositely extending and diamea rieally opposed coupling members 7, 8, which depend from the lower edge of the rim 6a.
Each of the coupling members consists of an inverted yoke consisting of a curved base 9 and a pair of vertically opposed arms 10, each of which project from one terminus of the base 9 and has the upper portion thereof {iattened as at 11. The arms 10 are secured to the periphery of the rim 6LL in any suitable manner, preferably by welding. One terminus of the base 9 is odset to provide what may be termed a laterally extending loop 12 open at its inner end and said loop 12 forms a clearance when positioning the lid or cover on the can body or when removing the lid. The clearance provided by the loops 12 enable the coupling mem'- bers to pass below the lugs 4, then by shifting the cover to the right the lugs ride upon the bases 9 of the coupling members and when in such position the lid 5 is coupled with the body portion. To release the lid it is shifted to the left until the lugs t are positioned at the loops 12 when the lid 5 can be removedfrom the can.
In the modied form of can body shown in Fig. 5 the body is indicated at 13 and the beaded reinforcing collar atll, the latter is shrunk upon the periphery of the body 13. The collar la has a counter-sunk open* ing 15 in which is seated the head 16 of a lug 17. In this manner the can body 13 prevents the separation of the lugs 17, as two lugs are employed, as is obvious. I Inthe modified form of can body shown in Fig. 6,`the body, which is indicated at 18, is not provided with a reinforcing collar, but with a bead 19 and has iiXedly secured at a point above the bead, a lug 20. Two lugs are employed, but only one shown.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 7, the construction is the same as that shown in The Fig. 5, with this exception that the lug 2i extends through the collar 22 and can body 23.
What I claim is 1. A lid or cover for receptacles comprising a body portion including a rim, a pair of oppositely disposed coupling members, each formed from an inverted yoke-shaped bar comprising a curved base and a pail` of vertically disposed arms having their upper termini secured to the periphery of the rim` and theirlower termini merging intoy Copies or this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the base, said base in proximity to the lower terminus of one of said arms having a curved offset to provide a clearance when coupling and uncoupling the lid, and said base arranged below the bottom of the lid.
3. A lid or cover for receptacles compris ing a body portion including a rim, a pair of oppositely disposed coupling members, each formed from an inverted yoke-shaped bar comprising acurved base and a pair of verticall disposed arms having their upper termini secured to the periphery oi the rim and their lower termini merging into the base, said base in proximity to the lower terminus of one of said arms having a curved oifset to provide a clearance when coupling and uncoupling the lid, the upper termini of said arms being flattened.
In testimony whereof I aHix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
