H. SOHELLER.
$PEWING BOX FOR USE ON BOARD SHIPS. No. 445,086. PatentedJan. 20, 1891.
NITED STATES HEINRICH SOHELLER, OF
SPEWlNG-BOX FOR U CHRISTIANIA, NORIVAY.
SE ON BOARD SHIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,086, dated January 20, 1891.
Serial No. 350,918. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEINRICH SOHELLER, a subject of the King of Norway, and a resident of Christiania, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spewing-Boxes for Use on Board Ships, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, convenient, and efficientspewing-box for use on board of Steamships and other sea-going vessels, which can be readily suspended from the edge of a ships berth or other support, and is so constructed as to render itsusceptible of being emptied or cleaned with little inconvenience.
To accomplish this object, my invention involves the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure l is a side elevation of a spewingbox embodying my invention with the parts in position for use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the upper section of the spewing-box turned on its hinged connection. Fig. 4: is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing a modification of the connection between the upper and lowersections of the spewing-box. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the lower section; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line so 1 Fig. 5.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein- The letter A indicates the upper movable section, and B the base-section, of the spewing-box. The base section is formed as a cup shaped vessel having at its top portion a vertically-projecting neck (2, while the upper movable section is composed of a funnel shaped body comprising a contracted tubular neck a, terminating at its lower portion in a flaring or conical-shaped base-plate or collar 0, which in the construction exhibited by Figs. 1 to i, inclusive, is hinged or pivoted to the upper edge of the neck 6, provided on the cup-shaped vessel 13, in such manner that the funnel-shaped upper section or receiving portion of the spewing-box can be turned on its hinged connection to the position exhibited by Fig. 3 for the purpose of emptying or cleaning the cup-shaped base-section 13, while if the fun nel-shaped upper section or receiving portion be closed, as in Fig. 1, it can be locked in its closed position by a spring-catch f, riveted or otherwise attached to the cup-shaped base-section I to engage the flaring or conical base-plate c of the upper section. In this construction the upper and lower sections A and B of the spe win g-box are hin ged together b ut, as shown in Fig. 5, the upper and lower sections may be flexibly connected by a chain and detachably interlocked with each other by hooks f on the lower section 13 engaging projections on the base portion d of the flaring or conical base portion a, formed on the contracted neck a. of the upper section A.
The movable upper section of the spewingboX is provided at one side with an overhanging hooked arm K, which is adapted to be hooked on the edge of a ships berth or any other suitable support for the purpose of sus-' pending the spewing-box when in use. The side of the upper movable section which is opposite the overhanging hooked arm K is provided with a properly-shaped curved plate h, riveted or otherwise secured at its ends and forming a handle by which to manipulate or carry the spewing-box when required.
The movable upper section-of the spewingbox enables the parts to be conveniently emptied and cleaned, and, in connection with the overhanging hooked arm K and the handle portion 72,.provides a novel, simple, desirable, and efiicient spewing-box particularly designed for sea-going vessels.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A spewing-box consisting of a cup-shaped HEINRICH SOHELLER.
