Description

HORACE EVERETT.
Improvement in Cans for Pulverize d Material.
NO.'131,5H. I Patent ed S ep;24,"1872 JWA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE EVERETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' IMPROVEMENT m CANS FOR PULVERIZED MATERIAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,51E, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE EVERETT, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Can for Containing Pulverized Material, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its object the ready conversion of a can for the transportation and storage of pulverized material into a dredging implement, and this object I attain by adapting to the perforated top a of the can B, shown in the vertical section, Fig. 1, a detachable cover, D, having lips b which can be inserted through some of the perforations and bent beneath the top a so as to retain the cover, and
' thereby prevent the escape of the contents or the can may be furnished with a detachable bottom. That portion of the top of the can or of the lid which is perforated is slightly raised, and over this slightly-raised portion fits a flanged disk or cover, D, having the above-mentioned lips b, which are formed by partially severing portions of the metal from the cover and bending these portions downward, as shown in Fig. 1. There are, in the present instance, three of these lips I), so situated as to coincide with three of the perforations in the lid, the lips, after being passed through the perforations, being bent upward against the under side of the top of the can, thereby securing the cover with sufiicient permanency to prevent its detachment and the escape of the pulverized contents of the can during the transportation and handling of the same.
When the can has been purchased for fami ly use, and its contents are required, the cover D can be easily detached with a suitable in strument; the blade of a table-knife, for instance, may be inserted beneath the flange of the cover and the knife used as a lever.
I claim as my invention- The combination, substantially as described, of the cover D and its lips I) with the perforated top of a can.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HORACE EVERETT.
