STANLEY H. LINDGBEN, OF MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, ASS IGNOR'TO AMERICAN CAN COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OIVNEW JERSEY.
rnroTIoN-ror CAN.
Application filed October 10, 1921. Serial No. 506,749.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY I-I. LINDGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-Top Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has general reference to containers, and has for its particular object the provision of a container cover comprising both an hermetic permanent closure adapted to have a portion thereof cut out to. provide an opening and a temporary closure adapted to be removably applied to close the opening in said permanent closure, 7
as desired, during the period of consumption of the contents of the container. V i
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a cover for containers wherein the temporary closure is provided with meansfor easy removal.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
. Figure 1. 's an elevation, partially in section, of a container embodying the principles of my invention; and v Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper part of a container, the out out disk and the friction cap being shown removed. v
. It will be noted that the structure which I have illustrated as an embodiment of my invention, comprises primarily a container body 11, a bottom end 12 hermetically seamed to the body after the container is filled, a cover generally indicated by the reference numeral 13, and a friction cap 14.
The cover is of one piece, by which I mean that it is not made of two or more pieces soldered together, and is permanently and hermetically secured upon the container body by seaming an upstanding flange 15 to the upper wall part 16 in the usual or any preferred manner. cover is struck upwardly at .17 to provide an The material of the upstanding sloping wall part 18 inwardly from the flange 15 and an elevated head or disk 19 adapted to be out out by the consumer about a peripheral groove or depression 21; The relative arrangementof the flange 15 and the upstanding part 18 is such as to provide therebetween a channel 22, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The disk 19 may be considered a frangible to form a readily removable and tight friction cover, and an upstanding flange 25 therebeyond provided with a bead or outwardly extending part 26 engageable by a prying-off instrument, which may be used to lift the cap, with the cover wall or flange part 15 as a fulcrum.
Containers constructed in accordance with my invention are preferably supplied to cus' tomers with the cover 13 permanently and hermetically secured thereto, and are filled through the bottom, the bottom end 12 being then applied to hermetically close the container. The consumer, upon receipt of the package, may readily pry off the cap 14 and out out the ring or disk 19 to permit re moval of the contents. The cap 14 then serves as a temporary'closure so long as desired, and by reason of the beaded extension 26 which I have provided, may be easily applied and removed. The top 27 of the cap may be substantially on a line with the upper extremity of.the flange 15 not only to provide an even construction, permitting stacking the cans one upon the other, but also to prevent accidental removal of the cap and provide leverage upon the head 26 from said flange 15.
It is thought that'the invention and many be made in the form, construction and arr ngement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or I sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A container comprising a body, a frangible one-piece cover hermetically secured to said body by a double seam, said cover having an elevated central area with a cutting groove, a depressed channel part between said seam and said area, a sloped friction wall 10 connecting said channel part with said area, and afrietion cover adapted to frictionally engage said friction wall and to serve as a temporary cover after said area has been severed along said cutting groove.
STANLEY H. LINDGREN.
