REFUSE-CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led .T une 26, 1911. Serial No. 635,436.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WALWIG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refuse- Containers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim of this specification, its object being to facilitate sanitary disposition of garbage and other refuse by providing convenientl located covered vaults for removable re use receptacles, a peculiar practically hermetic sealing cover for each vault being an essential feature of said invention.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a sectional view of a peculiarly covered vault containing a refuse receptacle that is partly broken away; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a fragment of a vault-cover section; Fig. 3, a similar view of a fragment of a seat for said vault-cover section, and Fig. 4, a plan view of another vault-cover section.
Referring by numerals to the drawings 5 indicates a cylindrical vault of concrete or, other suitable material, and permanently set in the uper end of its wall, Hush therewith as herein shown, or otherwise if preferred,
l is a seat 6 for a two section cover. The seat is a ring-like casting having a flaring inner face and an endless y inwardly extending lower flared edge Bange 7 provided with an i upper annular taper rib 8. Matching the inner face, flange and rib ofthe seat is the undergrooved outer face portion of another ring-like casting 9, constituting one section of a two-part cover for the vault, its groove 10 being for the engagement of the rib 8 of said seat. A l
The inner portion ofthe cover-section 9 is preferably downwardly extended to form a nozzle 11, the opening of which is flaring, and matching said opening is a downwardly tapered cover-section 12 in the form of a cast-metal plate having an eye-lug 13 in a central upper depression of the'same out of the way. To lighten the cover section 12 and save metal, it is preferably provided with an underside central recess of large dimensions as herein shown.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the seated cover is practically a hermetic seal for the vault 1n which a refuse pail 14; is set. To deposit refuse in the pail, the vault-cover section 12 is lifted away, by a hook (not shown) employed in connection with the eye-lug 13 of said cover-section, and the nozzle portion 11 of the cover-section 1 0 being of less area than the mouth of said pail none of said refuse can find its way into the vault, it being intended that said vault shall be always dry and clean. To remove the pail, in order to empty the same of its contents, it is obviously necessary to lift away the entire vault-cover.
I am aware of a vault for the reception of a refuse receptacle and having a ltwo-section cover one of which has a central opening of less area than the mouth of the receptacle closed by the other, it requiring removal of the entire cover to permit of withdrawal of said receptacle from the vault, but no provision is had for hermetic sealing of the vault by an interlocking engagement therewith of. one cover section into which the other has depending close fit.
I claim:
Patented Mar. 14, 191e.
A refusecontainer comprising a circular vault having a seat surrounding its upper end, a casting mounted on the seat and havcover section having its periphery shaped' complementalto, and adapted for sealing engagement with the said central opening and the said guide.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL WALWIG.
