SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,957, dated March 16, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WALKER, of Malden, county of Middlesex, State of Hassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garbage-Cans, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is aspecificatiomlike letters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention has for its object the production of a novel and serviceable garbagecan which shall be sealed hermetically tight and thus obviate any offensive smells coming from the can.

In accordance with my invention I have provided the top of the can with a water seal, the lid of the can having a flange to enter the water, said lid also having a suitable opening, which is normally plugged or closed by a valve, the removal of the plug or valve enabling the admission of air into the can, so that the cover may be readily lifted.

The inner wall of the can or part surroun ded by water to seal the same is represented as lower than the outer wall or top of the can, so that when the cover is put upon the can water may be readily poured upon the top of the can and run into the space constituting the water seal, any surplus water running out of said space through a suitable opening in the outer wall of the can.

The drawing in vertical section shows one of my improved cans.

In the drawing, A represents the body of a garbage-can, it having a suitable bottom, as B, the can being wired at its top, as at O, to give to the same strength, and having suitable handles D by which to readily lift it.

Inside the can I have provided a flanged ring E, the upper end of the same terminating below the level of the body of the can. The space between the ring and the body of the can is to hold water, as w, for a water seal, the depth of the water being limited by a discharge-opening w in the can-body, the said opening being lower than the top of the ring, so that water cannot get into the interior of the can.

I provide this can with a cover F, having a suitable handle f, and an inlet g, which may be closed by a plug or valve, as 72, the latter being herein shown as pivote'dat h, and provided with an arm 7L2 of sufficient weight to normally keep the inlet closed.

Garbage having been put in the can the cover will be applied, and water may then be poured on the top of the cover, and it will run from the cover into the space between the ring and the body of the can, forming the water seal. If one now should attempt to re move the cover, it will require a very considerable force, for the reason that suction will be produced sufficient to retain the cover in place, and to overcome this the inlet 9 must be opened, and as herein shown the valve is so constructed and applied thatit may readily and automatically be tipped by means of the rush of air against it through the inlet, when the cover maybe easily removed.

In ordinary garbage-cans, where the cover has a flange to fit tightly the interior of the body, the flanges of the cover soon become bent out of shape, and thereafter they will not readily enter the body, and as a consequence the cans are not covered, but in this my improved can there is a large space between the top of the ring and the body of the can in which the water is placed, and the downturned flange m of the cover will readily drop into place, even though bent considerably out of place.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A garbage-can, having at its upper end a Water-seal passage and provided with a cover havinga flange to enter said water seal, said cover having an air-inlet, a valve therefor which is normally closed but which may be opened when the cover is to be removed, and means to automatically open said valve for removal of the cover, substantially as described.

2. A garbage-can, composed of a body, and a ring attached thereto near its upper end and extended upwardly to leave a space between the body and ring, said space being provided with an outlet to discharge any surplus water from the said space, and prevent its entering the interior of the can, combined name to this specification in the presence of with a cover having a flange to enter said two subscribing Witnesses. space and the Water therein, to constitute a Water seal, and provided with an air-inlet 5 and an automatiCally-operating valve which \Vitnesses:
