UNITED STATES PATENT OFFrcE.
SAMUEL M. WILKES, OF STAUNTON, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID-BED BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,488, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. M. \VILKEs, of Staunton, in the county of Augusta and in the State of Virginia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Bedstead Bottom; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making'a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a movable head-rest for'bedsteads, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my movable head-rest applied to a spring bed-bottom.
A represents the bottom frame, supporting the springs B B, which, in turn, support the cross-bars G (3, and the bed-slats D D are fastened on top of the crossbars G C. To one of the cross-bars O is hinged a cross-bar, E, from which slats G G project upward between the bed-slats D D, and the upper ends of said slats G G are connected by a board or crossbar, H, completing the head-rest. This is supported in various positions by means of two props, I I, hinged to the frame A, and their upper ends catching under cleats a a attached crosswise on the under sides of the slats G G. The two props I I are connected by a cross-bar, J, so that they may be adjusted at the same time to support the headrest in any desired position.
This movable and adjustable head-rest may be used on any bedstead, whether provided with spring-bed bottom or not.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bed-frame A B C D with hinged props I I, hinged bar E, slats G G, bar H, and the cleats a a, all as shown and described. p
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of August, 1872.
