flZZa/vzga UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM GUDMUNDSEN, OF LEHI, UTAH.
GATE-CLOSER.
Application filed November 26, 1918.
b all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GUDMUND- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lehi, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Gate- Closer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for swinging gates and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be applied readily to a gate and will operate to close the gate automatically when opened in either direction.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is formed of few parts, will not readily get out of order, and does not detract from the appearance of the gate to which it is applied.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate having the present improvements attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment with its housing removed.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the attachment.
Fig. 4 is a plan view.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, A designates a gate of any desired construction connected by hinges B to a post C. The attachment constituting the present invention is designed to be located between the'gate and its hinge post O and includes an attaching plate 1 from which extends a stem 2. An elongated yoke 3 is mounted to swing on the stem and has a clip 4 secured to it and embracing and clamped upon or otherwise fastened to the gate A. A coiled spring 5 is mounted loosely on the stem 2 and its terminals are extended past opposite sides of the respective ends of the yoke and into engagement with pins 6 extending from the stem 2. If desired a housing 7 may be attached to the yoke for inclosing the spring 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
Serial No. 264,216.
WVhen the attachment is secured in position it will operateto hold the gate closed. Should the gate be swung in one direction the yoke 3 would be moved therewith about the stem 2 which alines with the pintles of the hinges B. This will cause one of the terminals of the spring 5 to be pushed away from its pin 6, thereby increasing the torsion so that, when the gate is released, it will be returned to its closed position. IVhen the gate is swung in the opposite direction the yoke will press the other terminal of the spring away from its pin 6 and the action will be the same as before described.
It is to be understood that, if desired, any suitable form of attaching plate can be used instead of the clip 4. This would allow the device to be applied readily to a wooden gate.
Importance is attached to the fact that the ends of the spring are bent to form loops which thus reinforce the spring at the points where it is subjected to the greatest strains. Consequently danger of the ends of the spring breaking off is reduced to the minimum. The use of loops eliminates sharp bends in the spring and renders the device more eflicient. The spring is under tension at all times so as to hold the gate shut under normal conditions. The housing serves to protect the spring and yoke from snow, etc.
What is claimed is An attachment for swinging gates including an attaching plate, a stem extending therefrom, a yoke mounted to swing on the stem, an attaching device extending from the yoke, a coiled spring upon the stem and between the ends of the yoke, loops formed by the terminals of the spring, and pins extending from the stem above and below the yoke, said loops bearing against the opposed sides of the yoke respectively and lying in the paths of the respective pins to place the spring under increased tension when the yoke is swung in either direction on the stem, and a housing secured to the yoke and inclosing the spring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ABRAHAM GUDMUNDSEN.
