- My invention relates in general to tongs or manually operated gripping devices, and more particularly to implements for use in furnaces and the like to facilitate the removal and handling of clinkers and similar obstructions which are too large to pass through the grates and which must be removed through the tire-door of the furnace. It is the object of my invention to provide a convenient, durable and inexpensive implement of this kind, whereinthe gripping members open longitudinally of the handle and extend laterally therefrom, and wherein the part which operates the gripping device is movable longitudinally within a laterally extended portion of the handle, so that the user with one hand may hold the grippers closed and also turn or rotate the handle, as well as to lift and push or pull upon the handle to move the gripped article in any desired way.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clinker-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to tongs or manually operated gripping devices, and more particularly to implements for use in furnaces and the like to facilitate the removal and handling of clinkers and similar obstructions which are too large to pass through the grates and which must be removed through the tire-door of the furnace. It is the object of my invention to provide a convenient, durable and inexpensive implement of this kind, whereinthe gripping members open longitudinally of the handle and extend laterally therefrom, and wherein the part which operates the gripping device is movable longitudinally within a laterally extended portion of the handle, so that the user with one hand may hold the grippers closed and also turn or rotate the handle, as well as to lift and push or pull upon the handle to move the gripped article in any desired way.

In carrying out my invention according to the illustrated embodiment thereof, the main body of the implement is formed from an integral metal bar, of suitable length and being in transverse section of the standard form designated as channel iron and comprising an intermediate web portion with two flanges extending in the same direction from the edges of the web. The principal portion 5 of the bar is rectilinear. At one end of the portion 5 the bar is bent to form a portion 6 extending downwardly substantially at a right angle to the main body, the bend being made toward the web side of the section, in the plane of the flanges, and so thatthe flanges are on the outer side of the bend. Said portion 6 is split longitudinally at its lower end and the sides spread apart transversely to form a V-shaped jaw having diverging prongs 7 as shown in Fig. 2, the forked portion also being bent slightly toward the flanged side of the bar, as shown in Fig. 1. At the opposite end of the body 5 the bar is bent to form an upwardly ex-. tending portion 8, said bend also being in the plane of the flanges but so that said flanges are on the inner side of the bend. At the upper end of the portion 8 the bar is again bent to form a portion 9 extending forward parallel with the body 5, the flanges ofsaid portion 9 facing the flanges of the body portion. At the end of the portion 9 a part of the web is split from the flanges and bent downwardly between them to form a tongue 10, as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 3.
The second principal member of the implement is an'integral metal rod having a rectilinear body portion 11 which rests slidably within the channel in the upper side of. the member 5. At the end adjacent to the part 6, said rod is bent downwardly to form a curved finger12 of which the end is transversely intermediate the ends of the prongs 7 and inclined oppositely thereto in the longitudinal plane of the handle. For confining the rod in the channelat said end of the implement, a flat metal clip 13 is disposed around the part 5 immediately adj oining the part 6, and said clip is prevented from sliding along the channel-bar by means of small tongues 14 which are chipped and turned out from the corners of the bar adjoining the edges of the clip, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At the end of the rod 11 0pposite the finger 12, said rod is bent upwardly to form a handle-portion 15 of which the vertical extent is such that the same will fit slidably within the U-shaped guideway formed by the parts 9 and 8, and the adjoining portion of the body 5. The ends of the portion 15 are rounded to fit into the corners of said U-portion without wedging or binding therein, and the intermediate part is bowed forwardly as shown, so that when drawn as close as possible to the part Sit will extend beyond the flanges of said part. Said part 8 and the tongue 10 limit the longitudinal movement of the rod, and the flanges of the part 9 prevent lateral movement of the part 15 such as to rotate therod 11 and move the finger 12 transversely out of opposition to the forked jaw 7 The manner of using the implement Will be obvious. The gripper formed by the parts 7 and 12 being placed around a clinker or like object, the same is gripped by pulling the handle-part 15 toward the part 8, one hand of the user grasping said parts 8 and 15 to press them toward each other. The object may be securely held, being engaged at three points by the finger 12 and prongs 7, so that it may be lifted, tilted or rotated as may be necessary to remove the same through the fire-door of the furnace, or to deposit the same in the ash-pit, where fumes therefrom may be drawn up through fire. It will be observed that the same hand of the user which keeps the gripper closed upon the object, may also be used for rotating the handle and lifting, prying or otherwise manipulating the implement, while the other hand grasps the middle portion of the handle. It will be noted further, that while the implement is entirely of metal and is of strong and durable construction, it may be manufactured at a minimum expense, owing to 1ts extreme s mpliclty, and the small 7 number of forming operations necessary to properly shape the channel-bar and rod from which the principal members are made.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: t
1. Clinker tongs comprising an integral channel-bar having a rectilinear body portion, a laterally extending jaw portion at one end, and a return-bent handle portion at: the other end; a. rod slidable longitudinally in the channel of the rectilinear body portion of said bar, said rod having a laterally extending finger portion adjacent to said jaw portion and cooperable therewith Copies of this patent may be obtained for to grasp an object between them, said rod having at the opposite end a laterally extended portion fitting slidably Within the return-bent handle portion of the channel-bar and guided thereby; and means adjacent to the aw for retaining the rod in the channel of the body portion of the channel-bar.
2. An implement of the class described, comprising a channeled longitudinal main member having an integral jaw extending laterally atone end thereof and an integral handle at the other end extending first laterally and then returned parallel with the main member, and a rod having a rectilinear body slidable in the channel of the main member, said rod having at one end a laterally extending portion adjacent to said jaw and having at the other end a laterally extending portion guided by said handle.
3. An implement of the class described, comprising a bar of channel-shaped section of which the forward end is turned downwardly and bifurcated to form a clinkerengaging j aw and the rearward end is turned upwardly and then forwardly paral lel with the intermediate portion of the bar. a rod'of'which the main body is slidable in the channel of said intermediate portion of the bar, the forward end of said rod turned downwardly to form a clinker-engaging hookadjacent to said jaw, the rearward end of said rod turned upwardly and guided in the channel of the forwardly turned portion of the bar, and means for limiting relative movement of said rod and bar.
