SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,454, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed November 2, 1903. Serial No. 179,460. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CLEAR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olinker-Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a tool for use in removing clinkers from the fire-boxes of furnaces and boilers, the object being to construct a tool for this purpose which will firmly grasp the clinkers, which will be sufficiently long to reach any part of the fire-box, and which while being light will be sufiiciently rigid and strong to remove large and heavy cinders.
The invention consists 'infeatures of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a handle, the outer end 2 of which is preferably covered with leather or some othermaterial which is a non-conductor of heat. To the forward end of this handle is pivoted at 3 a pair of jaws 4, having inwardly-extending arms 5, through which the rivet 3 passes. The jaws L are twisted at 6, so that while the arms 5 lie fiat on the handle 1 the wide parts of the jaws stand vertical. Resting upon the handle 1 is a sliding bar 7 connected at its inner end to the arms 5 by means of links 8, loosely riveted to the bar and to the ends of the arms. The bar 7 is loosely connected to the handle 1 by means of rivets 9, fitting in slots 10, formed in the handle, and the outer portion of the bar has a twist 11 that throws its extreme outer end at right angles to the handle, and this end of the bar is covered with leather or some other non-conductor of heat, thus forming a handle by which the bar can be moved back and forth on the handle, and as it is thus moved the jaws 4c are opened and closed from the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. II, to the position shown in full lines.
In the use of the tongs the inner end of the tool is inserted into the furnace, and by pushing inwardly on the bar 7 the jaws are opened out, and then when the jaws have been adjusted over a cinder an outward pull on the bar will cause them to firmly grasp the cinder, so that it can be drawn from the fire-box by means of the tool.
It is important that the article be light, so that it can be easily handled, and to have it quite long, as is necessary to do the work I form the handle 1 of channel-iron, which combines lightness with strength and rigidity. The bar 7 is secured to the back of the channel-iron, and the lower heads of the rivets 9 being located in the channel of the iron they do not rub or come in contact with the doorframe of the fire-box, so that the tool will work smoothly in being run into and drawn from the fire-box.
I claim as my invention In clinker-tongs, the combination of a channel-shaped bar having a handle at its outer end and provided with a longitudinal slot, a sliding bar on the flat side of said channel-bar, a rivet in said sliding bar to slide in the slot in said channel-bar; the rear part of said sliding bar being twisted to form an integral handle extending at a right angle to the bar, a pair of twisted jaws forming forward gripping members, and rearwardly extending arms at right angles thereto and pivoted to the flat side of said channel-bar, and a pair of connecting-links pivoted to said jaw-arms and to said sliding bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
