CLINKER-TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed February 27, 1918. Serial No. 219,421.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the oounty of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clinker-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in implements particularly designed for removing clinkers from fire boxes, grates or the like, though not essentially limited in utility to such purpose only having in view its special construction.
A device of the character of this invention is more especially useful in enabling the re moval of clinkers or the like in cleaning out fires while standing well away therefrom, and the safe carrylng of such clinkers or particles to the proper place of depos1t, all at the expense of a minimum amount of time and labor. The device is characterized as to novelty by the provision of a pair of cooperative operating members or rods provided with gripping jaws or tongs, one of such members being rotative with respect to the other to afford gripping action and simultaneous interlocking engagement maintainlng the jaws in gripped position, as well as long1- tudinally movable to enable disengagement of the interlocking relation for releasing the object gripped by said jaws.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be. hereinafter specifically described and claimed. Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings form ing a part of this specification, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the jaw I end of the device, parts being broken away and shown in section to disclose the cooperative relation;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end of one of the rod members;
Fig. 4: is a similar view of the other of said rod members; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the handle end of the device, partly shown in section.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing and specifically describing the device, 1 indicates the outer or tubular rod member of the same, having at an intermediate point the-grip piece 2 and at its extremity the enlargement or head 3. As shown in Fig. 4 this head has projecting therefrom a pair of gripping elements 4 constituting a jaw member and in addition the head 3 on its outer face is formed with a series of teeth 5. Mounted within the tubular rod member 1 is the cooperating rod member 6 which terminates at one end in an operating handle 7 by means of which the said rod may be rotated or shifted longitudinally in the manner hereinafter more par ticularly set forth. The rod 6 is also provided preferably with a single gripping element 8 projecting from its headed extremity 9 and the said extremity is suitably notched to form teeth 10 which are adapted when the parts are in operative relation to interlock with the teeth 5 upon the cotiperating rod member.
Interposed between the end of the outer member 1 and the handle 7 of the inner member is a spiral spring 11 which normally holds the rod 6 in its retracted position maintaining the locking elements 5 and 10 of the respective members in interlocking relation. The device is thus a simply constructed implement useful for the purposes herein mentioned and it performs its function in the following manner.
When it is desired to remove a clinker or other object from a the box the device is introduced thereinto until said object lies between the jaw members 4 and 8, whereupon the operator rotates the latter jaw member by means of the handle 7 so as to close said jaws about said object. Incident to this rotation the interlocking teeth 5 and 10 slip engagement and when the object is tightly gripped it is held by said teeth while the device is removed from the furnace and until the clinker or object removed is carried to the proper place of deposit. The object is then released by shifting the inner rod longitudinally of the outer rod against the tension of the spring 11. such longitudinal movement obviously disengaging the teeth 5 and 10 and permitting the jaws to be opened. It may therefore be stated that the gripping action is produced automatically when theinner rod is rotated to close the jaws and once the object is tightly gripped it is unlikely that it will accidentally from the jaws having in view the locked position which is capable of being assumed by the gripping elements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
An implement of the class described comprising a tubular rod and a rod cooperattherewith movably mounted within the first mentioned rod, said rods each terminating in a head at one end, teeth provided on the contiguous faces of the heads for establishing interlocking engagement between the Copies of this patent may be obtained for become displaced rod members upon rotation thereof in one direction, jaw members on saidrods for griping an object therebetween, a handle attached to an end of the inner rod and a grip piece upon the outer rod, and a spring interposed between the handle on the inner rod and the end of the outer rod for normally holding the rods in cooperative position with the teeth in interlocking engagement, said spring being yieldable upon longitudinal movement of the inner rod to allow disengagement of the teeth for opening the jaw elements aforesaid.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
