Description
H. H.- EVARTS.
Construction of Trunks.
' Patfited Sep.10, 18 72.
UNITED STATES HARRY H. EVARTS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION OF TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. #1358, dated eptember 10, 187i tailed into the same Vertically or lengthwise,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make u and use the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a trunk constructed with solid corners and the sides dovetailed vertically into the same, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one corner of a trunk, showing a slight modification of the same.
A A represent wooden blocks or bars of suitable size, to form, when placed in a vertical position, the corners of-a trunk, both the body and lid. The outer sides of these corners may be rounded, as shown in the drawing, or they may be left square, or any other desired form. In the corner pieces A are made two vertical dovetail grooves for the reception of correspondingly-shaped vertical tongues a, on the sides B B of the trunk, said dovetailed tongues and grooves being so arranged that the sides will stand at right angles with each other or,
if desired, they may be made so that the sides will stand at any other angle. In this manner, it will be seen, the sides are dovetailed longitudinally into the corner pieces instead of crosswise, which makes the trunk stronger and more durable. The corners of the dovetail may be rounded, as shown and described in a patent for design for dovetail, granted to me in the year 1870. If greater strength of the trunk is required, the sides may be made double, as shown in Fig. 2, the inner-piece B being dovetailed into the corner piece A, and the outer piece 0 dovetailed intothe bottom D. A strap, E, of iron or other suitable material may be fastened on the outside around each corner to still further increase its strength.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A trunk, constructed with the solid rounded wood .corner pieces A having dovetailed grooves extending from top to bottom, and with the side and end pieces B B provided at each end with elongated dovetailed tongues, which are fitted into the grooves in the corner pieces, all substantially as and for'the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of November, 1871.
. HARRY H. EVARTS.
