JOHN W. MQAULIFFE, OF PELHAM, NEW YORK.
CIGAR WI'H SELF-CONTAIN ED HOLDER.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application led April 26, 1919. Serial No. 292,781.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known'that I, JonN `W. MCAULIFFE, a citizen of the' United States, residing at town 'of Pelham, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementl in Cigars with Self-Contained Holders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others ,skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, refers ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to combine with a cigar a holder or mouthpiece which will permit the entire-cigar to be consumed inste..d of making it necessary to throw away a part of it.
A further object of the present invention to prod uce a, combined cigar and mouthpiece or holder which shall be simple in neat in appearance, and of sul'licient mechanical strength to insure that there will be no derangcmcnt or loosening of the parts when handled in the same way that cigars are usually handled up to the time they arc ignited by the consumer.
A further object of the )resent invention is to produce a simple and novel device of the character specified which can readily be applied by the cigar maker during the operation of making the cigar, without inconvenience to him, and without interferingr with the process of making the cigar.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particular-ity in the claims; but, for ai'full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may had to the following detailed description taken in connec- .tion with the accompanying drawing, wher 1n:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined cigar and holder arranged in accordance with one form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal Sectional view of the butt end of the unwrap ed cigar havin the cup-shaped holder a )p ied thereto, an the fastener for the hol er and the moutlipiece being shown detached;
Fig. 3 1s a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the butt end of the completed cigar; and
size and shape of l cigar maker proceeds Fig. 4 is an end view of the cup-shaped holder.
Referring to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent two halves of a cup-shaped device having a perforated stem, 3, projecting axially from the bottom thereof; the plane of division being preferably through the longitudinal center so as to divide the device into two equal halves, each comprisingr one-half of the cup 'and one-half of the stem. The cnn is vneferably made of a non-combustible material, conveniently metal. The cu) is provided with an annular inwardly progect ing rib or bead, 4, preferably formed in such a manner that no depression is left on the external surface of the cup. This may conveniently be accomplished by formingr the halves of the cup of soft metal pressed into shape between suitable dies.
The external contour of the cup is made of a size and shape to correspond to the the unwrapped bunch or body,r5, of the cigar to which the mouthpiece is to be applied, in the vicinity of the, butt end of such bunch or body. `The to make the member 5 in the usual way and he then places the two halves of the cup in position on 'the butt end, as shown in Fig. 2; this operation causing the damp tobacco to be compressed and the rib or bead to form for itself a seat or groove. A small bushing, 6, threaded externally and also internally` is then screwed upon the screw threaded stem, fastening the two parts of the cup together and making it' impossible for the cup to become loose or to be accidentally disengaged from the cigar without destroying the latter. After the' body or bunch has been made and the cup fastened thereto, the wrapper 7 is applied in the usual way, being carried back against the bottom as indicated at 8. A mouthpiece, 9, of cork or other suitable material is then screwed upon the bushing, clamping the. free end of the wrapper between it and the bottom of the cup and thus hilding the end of the wrapper securely in p ace.
While I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details `thus illustrated and described; but intendV to cover all forms and arrangements which over the cup and folded inwardly come within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
I claim l. An attachment for a cigar comprising a, cup having a downwardly projecting stem, the cup and stem being divided longitudinally into it plurality of parts, and means engaging with Huid stem for holding said parts together.
2. In a device of the character described. a cup-shaped member having a downwurdiy projecting stem` and inwardly projecting means in the interior thereof adapted to enibed itself in a cigar. said member being divided longitudinally into a plurality of parts,V and means adapted to engage with said stem to hold said parts together.
3. In a device of the character described, a, eup-shaped member having inwardly projectiner mean.` in the interior thereof adapted to embed itself into a cigar, said member being divided longitudinally into a plurality of parts, and means for detacbabl)l seeuring said partel together.
4. In a device of the character described, a. rap-shaped member having a stem, said member ineludiiner the ein being divided longitudinally, a bushingr adapted to be slipped over said stem, and a mouthpiece adapted to be applied over said bushing.
5. In u, device of the character described, a cup-shaped member having a stem, said member including the stem being divided iongitndinaliy, u bushing adapted to be screwed upon said stem, and a mouthpiece adapted toibe screwed upon said bushing 6. A cigar havin r the butt end inclosed in a cup, said cup eing divided longitudinally, and a mouthpiece coiiperatting with said cup to hold the parts thereof together.
7. A cigar having the butt end inclosed in a cup, said cup being,T divided longitudinally and havingr an inwardly projecting: portion embedded into the body of the cigar, and a mouthpiece attached to said cup and holding the parts thereof together.
8. A cigar havingr a eup closing tbe butt end of the body thereof. a wrapper e.\'ten l ing over the body and sides of they eup and folded over the bottom of the cup, a mouthpiece, and means for attaehiner the month piece to the eup in a manner to elamp the end of the wrapper between it and the eup In testimony .whereol l eign this speriiiCatioiL JOHN MCITLIFFI.
