.rpeisatien Qf Letters Patent Patented-Aug. 5, 1919.
Application filed January 4, 1917.V Serial No. 140,586.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NIoKoLAUs S. Danis, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Automobile-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks for automobiles, one of its objects being to provide a simple, compact and eliicient lock whereby the shifting lever can be held against movement.
A further object is to provide a lock which isk always in position to be snapped into place to lock the lever.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying Vdrawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:-V
iFigure 1 is a side elevation of the structure embodying the present improvements.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the segmental guide within which works the shifting lever 2 of an automobile. In the form shown the guide is closed at its sides so that only that portion of the shifting lever projecting above the guide is exposed to view.
Arranged close to and at one side of the guide 1 is a lock casing 3 having a tongue 4 at one end which is pivotally connected by a bolt 5 or the like to the floor 6 of the vehicle. Thus the casing can be swung in one direction so as to it snugly against one side of the guide or can be swung in the opposite direction away from the guide. Within the casing 3 is provided a spring pressed latch bolt 7 adapted, when the casingV is against the side of the guide l, to be seated within a receiving notch 8 provided therefor, thus to hold the casing 3 against movement away from the guide. .Any suitable lock mechanism indicated generally at 9 may be provided within the casing for actuating the bolt 7 to retract it from the recess or notch 8, this lock mechanism being operated by a key 10 provided for that purposle and which key is removable from the Projecting from that side of the casing 3 nearest the guide 1 are spaced locking fingers 11 adapted to work through openings 12 formed inthe side of guide 1, the fingers being so located that, when extending through these openings, they will hold the lever 2 against movement while in neutral position.
When it is desired to unlock the lever 2, a suitable'key 10 is inserted into the lock and the latch bolt 7 is lifted out of engagement with the notch 8. rlhe casing 3 is then swung laterally about its pivot bolt v5 so as to withdraw the fingers 11 from the openings 12, thus releasing the lever 2. The key can then be removed and the latch bolt 7 will be released and frictionally engage the oor 6 or other structure thereunder. When it is desired to lock the lever 2 it is merely necessary to shift said lever to the position in which it is to be locked and to then push the casing 3 against the guide 1 so as to cause the fingers 11 to enter the openings 12. The bolt 7 will automatically be seated in the recess 8 and the parts will thus be securely held until again unlocked as before pointed out.
A structure such as herein described is especially advantageous because the lock can be easily shifted into holding position without any manipulation, it merely being necessary to push against the casing 3 with the foot.
What is claimed is The combination with the floor of an automobile body, a shifting lever, and a guide for the lever having openings in one side, of a lock casing resting on the ioor and having a tongue at one end, a pivotal connection between the tongue and the Hoor, parallel fingers extending from one side of the casing vand movable through one side as my own, I have hereto aixecl my signature 1n the presence of tWo Witnesses.
NICKOLAUS S. DREIS.
of the guide and into position across the guide to hold the lever against movement Within the guide, and a look for automatically engaging the floor to hold the casing against movement when pressed against one side of the guide.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing Witnesses:
