Description

F. N. MARVIN. Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms. 131,107.
Patented Se.'p.3,1872.
imam JV/ZM yaw/1%" fi lwa U ITED STATES FRANKLIN N. MARVIN, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,107, dated September 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN N. MARVIN, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents, in-
Fig. 1, a top view; Fig. 2, a transverse section on line a; x; and in Fig. 3 a perspective view of the clamping device.
This invention relates to an improvement in the arrangement of abed-bottom in a bedstead; the prime object being to make the springs by which the bottom is made elastic adjustable or so as to be readily attached or detached. The invention consists in combining with a bedbottom and bedstead-frame a strap or fabricated spring attached to the bed-bottom perinanently, and by means of a clamping device adjustably attached to the bedstead.
A A are the two sides of the bedstead-frame; B B, the two ends, of any common construction. C are the slats which form the bed-bottom, placed upon transverse slats D. At each end of these slats D a strip,'a, of India rubber, is attached, and to each side of the bedstead, in the proper relative position, a clamping device to receive the said springs is attached. This clamping device consists of aplate, d, secured to the bedstead, and upon which a cam, f, is hung, as denoted in solid black, Fig. 2, and also seen in Fig. 3. Over this cam the spring a is passed down between the said cam and the plate, and, drawing over the cam, the pressure tends to tighten the cam upon the spring and firmly hold it in position. These springs are, by preference, made from India rubber, and by turning the cam away from the springs the sprin gs may be withdrawn or taken up, as the case may be. The four or more springs which are thus employed give to the bed the spring required and afford a means of adjustment or take-up, which is a great advantage in the use of India-rubber springs.
I claim as my invention- The arrangement of the clamping device at f upon a bedstead-frame, combined with springs 0, one-end of said springs attached to the bedbottom and the other adjustable by means of said clamping device, substantially as set forth.
