Description
` LAVVINIVA H. FOY.
l Cuffs.
I N0. 130,801, v Patented Aug. 27, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAVINIA H. FOY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,801, dated August 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAVINIA H. FOY, of the city and county of New Haven'and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuffs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a yperspective view of my improved cuff with the edges buttoned together, and Fig. 2 represents the cuif spread fiat.
This invention relates to'an improvement in what is known as false cuffs, or cuffs made separate from the shirt-sleeve, and it is especial] y applicable to Wide reversible or double cuffs. The object of the invention is to` obviate the necessity of buttoning many thicknesses of the material upon a single button, as is required with the ordinary mode of attaching the cuff to the Wristband of the sleeve, which mode is to pass the button-holes a b over the button that fastens the ends of the Wristband to each other. Owing to the thickness and stiffness of the cuit' when starched this operation is often difficult and vexatious, as it necessitates securing three thicknesses over onesmall button.
My improved cuff is made ofthe general form of the ordinary cuff, and is provided with button-holes a b c d at the ends-one in each corner, and one in the central part of each end to receive the studs or buttons f, by which the ends of the cuff are secured together; or, if preferred, common buttons can be sewed onto the ends of the cuffs in lieu of using studs.
Y In the central part of the cuff I form a button-hole, 7L, and at each side of said buttonhole I form an aperture or opening, k, of sufficient' size to admit the end of the linger, so
that the button-hole h can be conveniently passed over a button sewed for its reception upon the back of the Wristband.
With this construction the endsof the cui may be brought together and fastened, the cutf drawn over the hand and conveniently attached to the Wristband by the button and button-hole h without the trouble or annoyance caused by the old method. Without the apertures lf, or one of them, it would be diicult and impracticable to button the cuff at the back without breaking or wrinkling it; but with the apertures or openings it becomes very easy, and the cuff can be put on or taken olf With facility, as the nger can `be 'passed through the aperture and the button pressed up through the button-hole. rlhe apertures or openings can be made of any convenient size and shape 5 or, if preferred, -a simple straight slit can be formed parallel with the button-hole, although this would not be as convenient as the form of opening shown in the drawing. The button-hole h and aperture k can be located otherwise than at the center of the cuif, if preferred.
It will be understood that my improvement can be applied with equally good result to cuffs formed of linen, paper, or any other material.
Having described my improvement in cuffs,
what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A cuff lhaving one or more apertures in combination with a button-hole, substantially as shown and described.
