Description

N. R. HOLCOMB.
KEY FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 8. 1919.
atentedJune 24. 1919.
NOBLE R. HOLCOMB, or ELDORADO, KANSAS.
IY-FASTENER.
Application filed J'anuary 8, 1919.
T0 au w7wm z'zf may concrn:
Be it known that I, NOBLE R. HOLCOMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- 1ngs.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in key fasteners, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily and conveniently engaged with a key when in a look, so that said key is held against withdrawal, so that the key Will serve as a plugging means for the key hole to prevent the forcing through said key hole cf chloroform'or kindred materia] by persons desiring to make an unlawful entry.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which serves to hold the bolt against retraction in addition to holding the key against extraction.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement .of the several parts of my improved key fastener whereby certain impor tant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention Will hcreinafter bc definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I Will now proceed t0 describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, Wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation illustrating a look having a key fastcner applied the1eto constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in top plan and partly in section illustrating my improved device as herein set forth; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in side clevation with the key removed and the holding member in a second position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a casing of a look of any ordinary or preferred type, and vvhich includes a sliding bolt B. 1 denotes an open ing or key, hole in the casing C, and in Which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1919.
Serial No. 270,199.
a kcy K is adapted to be inserted in order to properly manipulate the bolt B. It is preferred thatthe key K be of a type:provided at its outer end with a 130W 2. A side plate of the casing 0 is provided with an opening a adapted to register with a threaded opening b in the bolt B when the bolt B is at the l1mit of its outward movement or locking position.
3 denotes an elongated plate provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 4. Insertible through the slot 4 is a clamping screw 5 which is also adapted to be disposed through the opening aand to be cngaged within the opening b in the bolt B when the bolt B is in its extended or locking position. The olamping screw 5 also serves to hold the plate 3 in applied position upon the casing C. H denotes an elongated flexible holding member, preferaloly formed of metal, and which is riveted as at 6, or otherwise secured to an end portion of the plate 3. After the key K has been manipulated to extend the bolt Bin locking position, the screw 5 is engaged within the opening 72 and the key K is adjnsted to have its 100W 2 vertically disposed as is particularly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings. The holding member H is then inserted through the bow 2 of the key K and the screvv 5 retatcd t0 clamp the plate 3 against movement. By this means it Will be self evident that the key K is effectively held within the key hole or opening 1 and in a position to stop or plug the hole or opening 1 against the passage of chloroform or kindred material therethrough as may be cndeavored by a person desiring to gain unlawful entry. By having the member H flexible, it Will be self evident that the frce end portion thereof may be properly adjusted in order to extend through the bow2. It is also preferred that the free end portion of the member II be gradually extended or tapered to facilitate its insertion through the boW 2.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a key fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with Which it may be assembled and operated, and it Will also loe obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the preoise arrangement and formation of and bolt for holding the bolt against retrothe several parts herem shown 111 carry1ng grade movement, and a key engagmg means out my inventlon in practme except as hereheld to the casmg by sa1d clampmg member.
inafter claimed. In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my 5 Vhat I daim is: 1 1 signature in the presence of two witnesses. 15
In combination with a late and a s idab e 1 bolt, said plate and the b%lt being provided NOBLL HOLCOMB with registering openings when the bolt is VVitnesses: in its locking position, a clamping member L. D. HADLEY, 10 disposed through the openings of the plate GUY M. BECK.
