Letters Patent No. 100,899, dated March. 15, 1870.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, EDWARD P. J onus, of Shell MoundPost Oice, in the county of Sunflower, and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp and Staple Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making partof this specification, in which- Fgure 1 is a front view of' myimproved device applie'd to gate or door.

Figure 4 is a plan view of the eye-bolt and its fastener that secures the hasp.-

The object of my present invention is to so secure the staple of the ordinary hasp fastening that additional security is afforded. l

The nature of my invention consists in securing the staple in the post by means of a bearing-plate or nut.

The `staple consists of an eye-bolt, having a screwthread cut on its shank. The bearing-plate or nut is inserted through an opening cut, bored, or mortised in the post, at such point that the opening in the plate or nut can be conveniently brought in contact with the end of the staple-shank, and being provided with a female screw-thread, is easily secured, simply by turning the staple.

The eye of the staplel is of such dimensions as to prevent its turning in the slot of the hasp, so that with my improvement, after the hasp is once secured by the lock, it is impossible to withdraw the staple, and consequently a positive security against depredations is afforded.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. f

A is the door or gate of the crib, `ont-house, 0r other building that it is dcsiredto secure.

B B are the posts, the door or gate being hinged to the post B', in the usual manner.

In the post B 'there is mortised, cut, or bored a horizontal opening, b. This opening b may be extended entirely through the post B, as shown in tig. 1, or only to such distance into thc body of the post as to allow the eye of the screw-nut or plate lit is intended to receive to be pushed opposite to the opening b', through which the shank of the staple is to be inserted.

C is the staple, and is constructed as shown in g. 3, that is, with a single shank, c, and an eye, c.

On the shank c of this staple is out a screw-thread, c2.

C is a nut or bearingLplate, that secures the hasp aft-er it has been inserted into the post B.

D is the hasp, and is constructed with an eye, d, and an oblong slot, D. rlhis hasp is secured to the door by aneye-bolt, E, which is constructed with a screw-threaded shank, e, and is fastened by a nut, E'.

The form ot' this bolt is clearly shown in fig. 4.

The operation is as follows:

In the post B is cnt or bored the opening b. It' this opening does vnot extendthrough the post, it must be made sufficiently deep to extend a short distance be vond the point at which it meets the opening Zi. Through this opening b is Apassed the shank of the stable C. The nut or plate C is then inserted in thc opening l), and pushed to such position that the end ofthe shank c shall enter the female screw of the nut or plate O. 'Ihen simply, by turningthe shank c, it .can be fastened, and drawn so as to'leave the lower face of the eye ol bearing against the `post B. Care should be taken that the opening b and .nut or plate O are. of such relative dimensions as to render it irnpossible for the latter to be revolved in the former. The eye-bolt E is inserted through an opening in the door or gate A, and is fastened by the nut E'y on the inside. The hasp having been placed over the staple and secured by the lock F, it will be observed that the staple cannot be withdrawn unless it is revolved, and as the slot D securely prevents the turning of thc eye cl, access cannot be had except through a key or the breaking of the lock. l

The device is readily applied, and when unlockei can easily be removed.

Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

Securing the staple O by means of a nut or plate, C', when the post to which it is to be attached has openings l) b' cut, bored, or mrtised in the saine, substantially as described.
