BASIN. Y
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1919.
Application led September 11, 1917. Serial No. 196.819.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, HARRY SCHNEIDER and JOHN SCHNEIDER, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Sloatsburg, in the county of 'Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet iixtures, and it relates more particularly to a retreating wash basin.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a wash basin which is mounted for use in connection with a water supply system (not shown) and which occupies the minimum of space when not in positionfor use.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is especially applicable and useful in connection with the state roomsV of ships, railroad sleepers, inotor` launches, and in any small room for bathing purposes.
Another object of the invention is to providea device of this character with a flexible passage way through which the water may escape from the bowl to the sewer or other receptacle outside of the room.
Another object is to provide a simple and thoroughlyT effective means for supporting the bowl in its useful position.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our bowl and the supporting means therefore.
Fig. Qis a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view. Y
Fig. 4- is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the adjustable prop or support shown in Fig. 1.
Referring; to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the bowl v5 may be of any preferred configuration, and is provided with the usual outlet 6. The bowl is also provided with a rib 7 and a flared upper edge or rim 8. Between the elements 7 and 8 is seated the horizontal portion 9 of a bracket which embraces the bowl and supports the same. This bracket is provided with a bearing element 10 which is connected to a supporting arm 11 by means of a pivot 12, the arm 11 being secured to the wall 13 of the room in which the bowl is located. The wall 13 is formed with a niche or recess, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said niche being sufficiently deep to receive the basin and its adjuncts when inthe retracted to retreated position. A
The bracket which supports the basin Vis provided with a depending yoke or element 14: which is provided with an apertured ear 15 to which is Vpivotally secured a rod 16 by means of a pivot 17. The rod 16V is longitudinally slidable in a tubular element 18, pivotally connected at 19 through a bracket 20 which latter is secured to the bottom portion of the wall 13. The element 18 is provided with a longitudinal slot 21 through which extends the shank of a thumb screw 22. It will be seen therefore, that when the basin is swung downward into the retracted position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, the rod 16 telescopes with the tubular element 18, while the shank of the screw 22 slides along` the slot 21. However, when the basin is to be held in the useful position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the thumb screw 22 is turned by the user, so that the head of this screw acts as a clamping jaw to clamp the adjacent portions of the element 18 between. the head and the body of the rod 16. While we have described but one prop, comprising elements 16 and 18, there are two of such props illustrated in Fig. 2, and but one of the arms 11. However, it is to be understood that there may be more than one of the supports 11, and more or less than two of the props.
In order that the basin may be properly drained, We provide, in the present instance. a. length of flexible tubing 23, so that the connections of the tubing are not affected when the basin is lowered as clearly shown in Fig. 1. However, it is herein the broad idea of this invention to employ any form of yielding` drain or conduit in lieu of the element 23. Moreover, our invention is not limited to the exact details of construction and arrangement of parts for allowing the basin to swing up and down, and for supporting it in its useful position.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, it will be seen that the element 9 constitutes a clamp which securely embraces the basin at all times, be-
ing formed with ears 9 which'are apertured from the reception of a rivet or other fastening element 12. The ears 9 are spaced apart suHcient-ly to allow the arm 11 to be extended therebetween and to move freely about the element 12 which latter also constitutes a pivot for the connecting of elements 9 and 11.
lVhat we claim as our invention is:
v l. In a device of the character described, a basin formed with an outwardly flared upper rim Vand with a retainingrib, a bracket having an element extending substantially around said basin and beintg` disposed between said rim and retainingzirib, means pivot-ally connected with said bracket and vcoperating therewith for supporting said basin in different positions, and means for allowing said bracket to swing with' said basin into different positions and for supporting said bracket and basin in the useful position of the latter.
'2. In a device of the'character described7 a 'basin7 a fixed support, acoinbined clamp,
a pivotal support'coinprising a-band which extends horizontally around the basin when the latter is in its useful position, said bracket also comprising a yoke which extends under the basin, said band also comprising spaced and apertured ears, means extending through the apertures ci said ears for drawing the band into clamping engagement with said basin and also extending through said xed support and coperatinfr therewith for pivotally supporting sait bracket and basin, and vmeans cooperative with said yoke forsupporting said bracket and basin in the useful lposition ofthe latter and for allowing it to be yretracted linto an out-of-the-way position.
In testimony whereof we aliix-our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
