Description

Dec. 27, 1932. M HENSCHEN 1,892,274
MEANS FOR BATHING PATIENTS Filed July 27, 1931 INVENTOR M01711? j9hzsr/ujz BY HERATTOYRNEY I a we e a. tin! Fa -tented tiles.
MINNIE HENSCHEN, OF WEST NEXV YORK, NEW JERSEY MEANS FOR BATHING PATIENTS Application filed July 27, 1931.
This invention relates to improvements in sick room equipment and particularly in the means for giving patients a bath and it is y the'principal object of my invention to pro- U vide a device supporting the patient while taking a bath and allowing its lowering into a bath-tub and out of the same.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character equipped 3 with a spring bed having an adjustable head rest and adapted to be lowered by means of a cable arrangement.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of this type of simple and therefore, inexpensive construction, yet
durable and highly efficient in operation.
A. still further object of my invention is the provision of a means for lowering a patient into a bath-tub to any desired depth and raising the same out of the tub and to allow a swinging of the support on which the patient rests from his bed-stead directly over the bath-tub.
These and other objects and advantages of 3 my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a 33 material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a bath-tub equipped with a patient supporting and lowering device constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View thereof in section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
4 Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view of the head rest adjusting device on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 5 is a perspective fragmentary detail view of a modified form of the lowering device for the supporting bed. As illustrated, in Figures 1 to 4, near a bath tub of any conventional type, a post 11 has its lower end embedded in a socket 12 in the bath-room floor resting upon the same with its collar 13.
The upper end of the post is curved as at Serial No. 553,339.
14 and carries at its extreme end a pulley 15 over which a cable 16 is guided which is also guided over a pulley 1? held by a collar 18 near the upper curved part of post 11.
The end of cable 16 is attached to a drum 19 held in a suitable bracket 20 on post 11, the spindle 21 of which has attached thereto ahan-dle 22 by means of which the drum is turned in its bracket. The other end of cable 16 carries a ring 23 through which are guided ported by springs 29 and handles 30 on both sides of the frame.
A head rest 31 of similar construction is pivotally attached, as at 32. to the bed and has secured to its sides a toothed segment 33, the teeth of which engage the end wall of a bracket 34 and are held in their adjusted position by means of a spring 35 or the like.
In the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figure 5, a rod 36 is turnably held at its end on sockets 37, 38, of arms 39, 40. secured to a wall or other support Intermediate its ends the rod 36 has attached thereto a sleeve 41 from which extends a substantially horizontal arm 42 braced at its outer end by means of a brace 43 against rod 36.
The outer end of arm 42 carries a pulley 44 over which a cable 45 is guided equipped with a hook 46 adapted to engage ring 23. 8
The other end of cable 45 is guided over a pulley 47 at the underside of the inner end of arm 42, and the end of the cable 45 may be secured to rod 36 as indicated at 48.
The device operates as follows:
A patient resting on bed 28 with the head rest 31 suitably adjusted is lowered gradually by the proper operation of cable 16 by means of drum 19, and handle 22 into the bathtub 10 and raised therefrom after havstead over the bathtub and then lowered or 1 vice-verse by simply turning the post 11 or rod 36.
It will be clear that I have described and shown the preferred form of my invention only and that I may make such changes in the construction thereof as come within the scope ofthe appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described a turnable post, a curved upper end thereon, a pulley at the extreme upper end of said post,
15 a cable guided over said pulley having a rin at its outer end, a drum to which the other end of said cable is attached, a handle for turning said drum, :1 bed composed of a frame and spring supporting platform, cables secured to said bed and guided through said ring, an adjustable bead rest for said bed, and means to adjust said head-rest.
:2. In a device for giving patients a bath, a post having its lower end turnably embedded in a socket in the bathroom floor near the bath-tub and having a curved upper end, a pulley carried by said end, a frame, a bed supported by springs carried by said frame, lateral handles on said frame, a head rest for said bed adapted to be angularly disposed to the bed by a toothed segment, a collar on said post carrying a pulley, a cable guided over said pulley on said curved upper post end, said cable branched to suspend the ends of the frame therefrom, a bracket on said post, and a drum on which the end of said cable is wound, and means to wind and unwind said cable onto and from said drum.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MINNIE HENSCHEN.
