Be it known that I, RICHARD L. D EZENDORF,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhat- 5 tan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in ater-Closets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in Water-closets, which Will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The object of the present invention is to produce an improved closet which will be healthful from both hygienic and sanitary points of view.

An important feature of the invention is the provision of means which enables the body to be suspended over the seat in a natural attitude with the knees raised and so as to bring the weight on the legs and feet, thereby bringing into action certain muscles affecting. the bowels which in other attitudes are rendered inactive. The regular and proper use of this invention is calculated to strengthen these muscles of the body so that the bowels will act naturally and without resorting to the use of cathartics.

The invention may be embodied as a permanent fixture in closets at the installation thereof, or it may be used as anattachment which is applicable to closets already in use.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in-all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of a closet embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3is a detail section of another form of the invention. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a part of an attachment, and Fig. 5 is an elevation showing the invention applied as a permanent part of Ktcloset.

A designates a bowl or hopper which at its uppe: front portion is provided with a forward extension a; but in all other respects this bowl name s milar in construction to devices which an ordinary in the art.

B is the seat, Which may be hinged at its back edge at to any suitable support. The

seat is provided with an opening 6, which at the rear portion is quite wide, and shaped to allow the body to descend or hang well down through the Opening, and the front portion 6 of this opening is contracted in width and extended well forward beyond the major portion of the opening 6, so that this extended and contracted front end 6 will lie directly over the front extension o of the bowl. thus making provision for the entrance of the urine into the bowl without wetting the seat.

In one form of the invention I embody a foot-rest in the form of an attachment as shown by Figs. 1 to L inclusive. The footrest is in the form of a horizontal bar C, supported in a suitable way below the seat and substantially at the front side of the bowl. As shown by Figs. 1 and 2, the foot-bar is recessed to fit slidably on an uprightpost D in order that the foot-bar may be raised or lowered to adapt the device for use by persons of different sizes; but this adjustment is not strictly necessary from the broad standpoint of this invention, because the foot-bar may be fastened in a given position on the post or on the bowl. The post D is connected to the seat B in a suitable way as, for example, by the hinge (Z; but, if desired, this post may be fastened hingedly and detachably tothe seat by the clamp E. (Shown by Fig. at.) This clamp E is fashioned to fit beneath and around the edge of the seat, and to the clamp is pivoted the upper end of the post, as at c. This post D may be of any desired length; but, as shown by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the post exceeds the height of the bowl in order that the seat B may beheld in a forwardly and upwardly inclined position. The lower end of the post may be fastened to or rest on the floor; but I prefer to provide it with a foot d, which will prevent it from slipping on the floor and also allow the attachment to be raised with the seat. Any suitable means may be adopted to fasten the foot-bar adjustably to the post. In Figs. 1, 2, and 4 the post is provided with a series of apertures f, into either of which may be fitted the hook g of a hanger G, that is pivoted at g to the foot-bar, said hanger serving to suspend the foot-bar at any desired point below the seat.

Instead of attaching the post directly to the seat I may use a top piece H, to which the post is hinged at h, said top piece being adapted to rest on the bowl, to which it is fastened by the catch h, the seat B resting on top of the piece H. The post D may also be provided with a series of ratchet-teeth z', and the foot-bar C may be equipped with a spring-actuated latch I, the latter being confined in a suitable casing e" and adapted to engage with either of the teeth 6 for holding the foot-bar fixedly at any desired distance below the seat B.

Instead of fastening the foot-bar and post to the seat I may employ means by which the foot-bar may be secured or mounted directly on the bowl A. One means for securing this end consists in the bands or straps J, which are clamped around the bowl, as shown by Fig. 5, and these clamps are attached to the post D, on which the foot-bar G is held adjustably or otherwise. Any other means may be adapted for supporting the foot-bar on the bowl, and, in fact, the invention contemplates, broadly, the use of a foot rest or support below the seat and at or near the front side of the bowl. In some instances the foot rest or support may be a permanent fixture on the bowl by making it integral therewith or fastening it to the same.

The seat B may haveaflat top surface, or any suitable shape may be given to the top side of the seat.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination in a structure of the type specified, of a seat member, a standard secured in vertical position beneath the forward margin of said seat member, a foot-supporting bar or plate arranged transversely upon said stand ard and vertically slidable thereon, and means for securing said foot-supporting bar or plate at different heights upon the standard.

2. The combinationinastructure of thetype specified, of a seat member having an upward and forward inclination, a standard secured in vertical position beneath the seat member at its forward margin, a foot-supporting bar arranged transversely upon said standard and vertically slidable thereon, and means for positively securing said bar at different heights upon the standard.

3. The combination inastructure of the type specified, of a seat member, a standard secured in vertical position beneath the seat member at its forward margin, a foot-supporting bar provided at its rear margin with a recess to receive said standard and arranged for vertical sliding movement on said standard, and means for securing said bar in different positions on the standard.

4. The combination in astructure of the type specified, of a seat member, a standard removably secured in vertical position beneath the forward margin of the seat member, a footsupporting bar disposed transversely of said standard and vertically slidable thereon, and means carried by said bar for securing it at different heights upon said standard.
