MARCO CORTOPASS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAND TOY.
Application filed May 3, 1918.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARoo GoRToPAss, a
citizen of the United States, residing at' Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sand toys and has for its object to provide a toy of such class and with means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, including a miniature figure, actuated by sand impacted against a revolving element, to set up the appearance of a j uggler juggling a spherical element.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sand toy, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, amusing to children when operated, strong, durable, conveniently operated and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended In the drawings wherein like reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: I Figure 1 is a frbntelevation of a sand toy in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line IIII, Fig. 1.
" Fig. 3 is a section on line IIIIII, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line IVIV, Fig.2. Referring" to the drawings in detail 1 .de-
notes an .oval shaped casing, open at its bot tom, and partly closed at its top by a plate as at 2. As the length of the plate 2, is such, as not to completely close the top of the Gas ing 1, an inlet 3, is provided.
The open bottom or lower end of the casing 1, hasinwardly extending deflectors 4, which depend below the bottom of said casing 1, andact as means to deflect the sand 5. into a cup or receptaclefi, which is positioned below the casing 1, the latter being mptsdea above said receptacle 6', by legs Specification of Letters Patent.

or standards 7, which are attached as at 8, to the lower portions of the side walls of the casing l.
The front wall of the casing 1, near its lower end has projecting forwardly therefrom a platform 9, which supports a miniature figure 10, representing a Cjuggler or clown. The arms of said figure 10, are indicated at 16, and the hands at 13. The arms are formed of fabric. Arranged against the rear of each of the arms 16, is a curved spring, which are indicated at 11, 12. The outer ends of the springs 11, 12, are connected to the hands 13, and their inner ends attached to an oscillatory lever arm 14, arranged at the rear of and supported from the figure 10, as at 15. The arms 11, 12, conceal the springs 11, 12.
J ournaled in the casing 1, and extending transversely therefrom is a revolving shaft 16, carrying a rotor in the form of a wheel 17, provided with radial buckets 18, The shaft 16, is extended from the front of the casing 1, and cranked as at 19. Loosely connected to the cranked end 19, of the shaft 16, is an elongated link' 20, which is pivotally connected as at 21, to the oscillatory lever 14.
Pivotally secured to the rear of the figure 10, below the pivot 15, as at 21, is a bar 22, which may be formed of resilient material and which carries on its outer end a spherical member 23. The lower end of the bar 22, is'offset and bears against a bow shaped spring 24.
Suspended above the casing 1, by the inclined supports 25, is an inverted conical receptacle26, having an outlet 27, at itslower end, and which isarranged over the inlet 3. The receptacle 26, is, adapted to contain a charge of sand 5, and when the sand isv discharged from the receptacle 26, passes down the inlet 3, and into the casing 1, which impacts against the buckets 18, revolving the wheel 17 which in turn revolves the shaft 16, the latter shifting the link 20, thereby oscillating the lever 14. During the oscillation of. the lever 14, the arms 11, 12, will be carried therewith and the hands13, alternately engaging the member 23, will shift the same from hand to hand, giving theappea-rance of juggling a ball or other object.
he discharge of sand from the receptacle 26, is controlled by gate 28, which is pivoted on a post 29, supported from the receptacle 26. The gate 28, has-a handle 30.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A sand toy comprising means to provide the representation of a human figure including a pair of arms, an oscillatory lever pivotally supported by said means and having said arms connected therewith, said arms having means to provide the representation of hands, a rod pivotally supported from the figure and carrying a spherical member at its outer end adapted to to be alternately en gaged by the representation of the hands to shift said member in opposite directions, a rotor operated by a charge of sand and in eluding a shaft, and an operative connection between said lever and said shaft for oscillating the lever.
2. A sand toy comprising a rotor operated by the impact of sand and including a shaft, an oscillatory lever, a support therefor, an operative connection between the lever and shaft and for oscillating the lever when the rotor is operated, an element pivoted to said support and carrying a spherical object, and a pair of elements connected to said lever and alternately striking said spherical object for shifting it in opposite directions.
3. A sand toy comprising a rotor including radially disposed buckets successively receiving a charge of sand for revolving the rotor, said rotor further including a revolving shaft, an oscillatory lever, a support therefor, an operative connection between said lever and said shaft for oscillating the lever when the rotor is operated, a. spherical element, a carrier therefor, and means eonneetedwith said lever and alternately -striking said spherical element during the oscillation of the lever for shifting the said spherical element alternately in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
