Description
-L. E. BOW/s n.- 10v WOODPECKER.
APPLICATION HLED APR. 1, 1920-.-
uma w: 24; 192511;
UNETEE LESLIE E. BOWSER, 0F HOBART, OKLAHOMA.
TOY VIOODPECKER.
Application filed April 1, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LESLIE E. Bowsnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hobart, in the county of Kiowa and State of Oklahoma, has invented new and useful Improvements in Toy VVoodpeckers of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively inexpensive and amusing toy designed to represent and illustrate the activities of a Woodpecker or similar object, suitable for juvenile entertainment or for advertisement purposes, and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a front View partly broken away.
The toy in contour is designed to represent a tree trunk or stump 10 surmounting a suitable base 11 and having affixed thereto an object representing a Woodpecker and comprising a body 12 of which the legs 13 are secured in any convenient manner as indicated at 14 to the upright 10, and a relatively movable head member 15 pivotally mounted as at 16 upon the body member and adapted for oscillatory or vibratory movement to the end that the beak 17 carried by and forming a part of the head member may come in contact with the surface of the upright or standard in imitation of the action of a Woodpecker in seeking insects and the like for food, it being understood that the upright or standard may be made of tin or sheet metal or other resilient or resounding material so as to emit a sound of appreciable volume under the strokes of the beak.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 241, 19210 Serial No. 370,500.
Connected with the pivot pin 16 which forms the fulcrum of the head member is an escapement lever 18 arranged in cooperative relation with an escapement wheel 19 driven through an intermediate train of gears 20 by a driving wheel 21 to the arbor 22 of which is attached a spiral spring 28, a suitable dog and arched mechanism 2d and 25 being employed in connection with a winding button 26 located exteriorly of the body member of the object as a means of winding the spring.
Obviously the motion communicated from the driving gear or wheel 21 to the escapement wheel will cause the escapement lever to impart a vibratory or oscillatory movement to the head member which will periodically bring the beak portion of the latter into contact with the resilient member represented by the upright or standard 10.
What is claimed is:
A toy having a resonant supporting member and an object in representation of a Woodpecker attached thereto and consisting of a hollow body member and a pivotal head member having a beak in contacting relation with the supporting member and means housed in and concealed by the body member and consisting of an escapement lever connected with said head member, an escapement wheel in operative relation with the escapement lever, a driving gear connected with the escapement wheel, and an actuating spring connected with the driving gear, for imparting oscillatory movement to the head member.
In testimony whereof he atfixes his signature.
a LESLIE E. BOWSER.
