TOY
Filed March 51, 1932 INVENTCIR RTTEIRNEY Patented May 2, 1933 UNETED S'TA-TES FATE r. err ca- JOSEPH BLOCK, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, nssrenor. or SIXTY own.
HUNDREDTHS TO M. GAYDOSH, OF- WHEELING, WEST- VIRGINIA TOY Application filed March 31, 1932. Serial No. 602,196.
This invention relates broadly to toys, and more particularly to a toy of simple and inexpensive construction whereby the various actions and movements of two boxers, or
tion and arrangement of parts shown in theaccompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, a portion of the casing being broken away; and- Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same, a portion of the casing also being broken away to illustrate the operating mechanism.
Referring to said drawing, reference numeral 1 designates a casing of substantially rectangular form and preferably made from sheet metal.
A shaft 2 is suitably journaled in a side wall of said casing 1 and has its opposite end journaled in a bearing surface located adjacent the upper end of an upright standard 3 which has its lower end portion permanently attached to the bottom or floor of the interior of the casing 1, said shaft 2 extending outwardly from the side wall of the casing and having a handle member 4 attached to said protruding end of the shaft exteriorly of the casing.
The shaft 2 carries intermediate its ends a gear 5, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth'of a pinion 6 carried by a shaft 7, said shaft 7 beingjournaled in and supported by upright standards 8, the latter being suitably supported on the floor of the casing 1, as shown.
Said shaft 7 carries on an end thereof a crank arm or eccentric disk 9 having a wrist pin 10 to which is attached the lower end of a connecting rod 11, the upper end of said connecting rod being pivotally attached, as shown at 12, to a platform 13.
form and made from a flat piece of sheet -metal, is pivotally supported, as shown at 14, at opposite sides of the casing 1, the plat-.
form adjacent the pivotal connections being elevated slightly above the top level of the casing.
Resiliently mounted, as by means of coil springs 15, above the level of the surface of the platform 13 at appropriate positions are images 16, in this case representing boxersor prize-fighters, the limbs 17 of each of said images being loosely attached to the body members thereof and being. adapted to have free and unobstructed movements with respect to the body members.
Lugs 18 extend outwardly from the casing 1 at each of the right angle corners thereof and support posts 19, each of the latter being connected by twine or thin wire 20, thus simulating the usual form of ring.
A top 21-is provided to enclose the open upper end of the casing 1.
As Will be readily understood, manual turnmg of the handle 4, through the intermediate gearing described, causes a rapid reciprocating or rocking movement to be imparted to the platform 13, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the resiliently supported images 16 are tossed back and forth violently resulting in the loosely carried limbs 17 be ing jerked and thrown about in a reckless manner, thus in miniature effect realistically simulating two boXers being engaged in violent combat.
It will be understood that minor changes in shape, size and re-arrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired. For instance, the images may be made to simulate other characters than those shown in the drawing and herein described.
What is claimed is In a device of the character described, a casing, a rectangular platform pivoted transversely to said casing intermediate the ends of the platform, a plurality of connected posts encircling said platform to resemble a prize'ring, jointed images supported in face to face relation above said platform by The platform 13, preferably of rectangular means of coil springs which have their lower ends attached to said platform, means including a crank-operated connecting rod housed Within said casing for effecting rocking'movement of said platform about its transverse axis, such rocking movement of the platform alternately thrusting the thereby-carried images toward and away from each other on their spring supports in imitation of two persons engaged in physical combat.
Tn testimony whereof, I affix my signature JOSEPH BLOCK.
