FIGURE TOY.

This invention relates tofigure toys and its general object is to provide a sounding toy to simulate a Woodpecker or the like, its actions and noise causedthereby when pecking a tree.

A further object of the invention is to provide a toy that is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate, and will afford much amusement for young and old.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure l is a side elevation of the toy forming the subject matter of the present invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail view.

Figure 3 is a sectional view'taken' on line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a detail view partly in section and illustrates the noise making feature.

Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail the reference numeral 1 indicates a staff provided with a handle 2 at one end and secured to its opposite end for ornamental purposes are flags or other decorative elements such as indicated by the reference numeral 3. The staff may of different colors.

Secured to the staff preferably adjacent its upper end and upon diametrically opposite sides thereof are parallel arms 4 having their portions adjacent the staff curved slightly upon themselves and thence extended outwardly to provide spaced parallel apertured ears 5. The opposite portions of the arms also extend outwardly from the staff and are enlarged and pivotally secured to the body 6 of the figure as best shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The arms are so formed so as to simulate the legs of the figure. which is provided with a head 7 having formed therewith a bill 8 having a flat end and to which is secured a tack 9 having aflat head 10 for a purpose which will be presbe painted any desired color or covered with paper or the like ently apparent. The head as well as the body of the figure is painted or otherwise colored to simulate a Woodpecker or like bird but of course other figures could be used in the place of a bird without departlng from the spirit of the invention. Journaled in the apertures of the ears 5 1s a crank arm 11 having secured thereto a drum 12 disposed between the ears 5 as best shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, and a link 13 has one end pivotally secured to the cranked end of the arm 11 while its opposite end is pivotally secured to the body 6 of the figure. 1

Secured to the upper end of the staff 1 by means 14 is one e'nd'of an'elastic member 15 which has its opposite end secured to a string or other flexible element 16. The string 16 is arranged in parallelism with the staff 1 and is guided by U-shaped staples 17 embedded in the staff at intervals as best shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The string 16 is looped about the drum 12 and secured to its lower end is a ring 18. Secured to the staff 1 and arranged in the path of the head of the tack 9 is a metallic plate 19.

From the above description and disclosure in the drawings, it will be obvious'that I have provided a toy that may be easily operated to cause the movement of the body of the figure and the bill thereof to cooperate with the plate 19 so as to provide a noise similar to the noise caused by the Woodpecker pecking a tree, at the same time affording much amusement as will be apparent. The operation of the toy is very simple and all that is necessary is to exert a pull upon the string 16 which will cause the rotation of the drum 12, and such rotation will be imparted to the crank arm which will in turn cause the link 13 to reciprocate and impart such movement to the body It is thought rom the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of-my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A toy of the character described comprising a staff, a handle secured to its lower end, a pair of arms secured upon diametrically opposite sides of said staff, apertured ears included in said arms, a body pivot-ally secured to said arms, a head formed on said body and including a bill, a metallic member secured in said bill, a plate fixed tosaid stafi' in the path of the metallic memberyardruni pose specified.

A'toy of the character described comprisingastatf, a handle therefor'and being secured to its lower end, decorative means secured to itsupper end, a pair of arms se cured to said staff upon diametrically opposite sidesthereof, apertured ears'formed with said arms atone end thereof and being arranged in spaced parallelism with each other, a figure includingza body pivotally secured to the opposite end of said arms, a head included in said figure and being pro vided with a bill, a tack secured insaid bill and being. formed with a-flat head, amet-allic plate secured to the staff and arranged in the path of the head of the tack,- a drum journaled between the ears, means for rotating -said drum, andmeansbetween said drum and'the body for reciprocating'the'latter for causing the head of the tack to engage'said metallic plateto-provide a noise simulating the noise caused by a Woodpecker when pecktree.

3.
