Patented May 13, 1919'.
Application filed my 1.0, 1917. Serial No. 18?,659.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l (inn. Roux-inn Wwron.
a citizen of the lnited States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful lmprovements in Automatic Lid-Supports, of which the following is a specification. ,w
This invention relates to that class of devices used. on such articles as phonograph cabinets for maintaining the top or lid thereof in open position a ainst inedvertent closing. The object of the invention is to produce such a device that is very simple yet positive and dependable in action and a device that maybe installed with a minimum of expense. With these dojects in view, the invention consistsno'f the arrangement, construction and combination of parts hereinafter de scribed and particularly pointed out in the claims, it being understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the details of construction nor to the use of thedevice in connection with phonographs for it may be used on trunks, boxes, etc.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my device in place on phonographs;
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the bracket and with the cam in place;
Fig. 3 shows a vertical section taken in the plane of the pivot of the cam;
Fig. 4 shows a side elevation of the cam; Fig. 5 is an edge View of the bar and F ig. 6 is a side view of the same; Fig. 7 is a View similar to Fig. l. but with a modified form of the device;
Fi 8 is a View of the bracket in this much ed form;
Figs. 9 and 10 show the different positions the cam of this form assumes;
Fig. 11 shows a side "iew of the modified bar; and
Fig. 12 an edge view of the same. In the drawings the numeral 11 indicates the honograph case, 12 its top Or lid and 13 t 1e support for the phonograph table. 1st indicates a bar pivot-ally carried by a )late 15 secured to the lid 12. Adjacent the rec end oi? the bar 14.; a 'pin 16 is provided. 17 indicates a bracket carried by either the side of the case 11 or the support 13 and'is provided With an inclined dependii iflg porn this portion 18 is pivoted a cam 20 having two intersecting slots 21 end 22in its lower part which unite in an opening or slot 23. The upper part of the cam is inclined and pro rid-ed with two lugs or fingers 2st and 25 as shown in Fig. 4-, which engage the under face oi the bracket 17 to limit the movement of the care. This cam is preferably dished and acted u on by a spring 26 encircling its pivot 2'2", w'iieh spring functions to retard pivotal movement of the cam. '28 re resents a recess located in the groove 19 as s iown in Fin. 2.
7" he bar 14 passes through the slot 2% oi the bracket 17 and the pin 16 of the bar on crates in the slots of the cam and is long! enough to extend into the slot 19 when the latter registers with the slots in the cam. A slotted anti-rattling member 50 of suitable material secured to the bracket 17, as illustrated in Fig. 3, prevents mar-ring or rattling ofthe bar 14. It will be obvious that the bar 14 will pass through the slot 51 and J' r i'rlctlonally engage the sides thereof thus being held out of contact with the sides of the slot 19. i
In Fig. 1 the device is open and maintained against closing by the engagement oi? the pin 16 with the lower ofiset 28 of the slot 19. If. however. the lid is desired closed. it is first raised slightly which unscats the pin 16 from the lowerollset 9.8 and raises it up wardly in the slot 21 until it engages the end thereof. Continued movement of the pin until it also engages the end of the upper offset 538 slot 19 causes the com to rotate but this in turn has a retarding action upon the movement of in and bar. The earn mm s until the end of the slot 21 registers withl the slot 19 So that downward movement and closure of the lid is permitted as the pin moves out of slot 21 past the shoulder 39 and thence out of the slot 19. As the pin passes into slot 19 the cam is caused by the pin to rotate slightly farther bringing the slot 22 also into registry with the slot that upon opening the lid. the pin 1 (1 will pass upwardly past the central projection 40 on the cam into the slot 22. Continued movement of the pin engages the end of the slot 22 which rotates therein slightly whereby the exit of the pin out through slot 19 is prevented by the projection 40 and the shoulder l1. Engagement with the end of the slot 21. causes the cam to rotate slightly farther into the position illustrhted in Fig.
Mill
llllli 1 with a consequent retarding action upon fiirther upward movementof the bar and lid. From engagement with the (n-:1 of the slot 22 the lid and hair are rlrop )cd slightly so that the pin moves past shou ltlcr 43 and falls into the ofisct- 28 and the lid is mainmined opcn as described.
In the "form shown in Fig. l the "pin 16 is integral with the hruckct 17 while the bar 1-! carrim: lllu cam 20. The structure of the cam :2 is quite similar to the cam shown on Sheet 1. with the exception that the. lug or fingers '24 and cooperate with a pin on the mi- 14' to limit the movement. of the cam. The bracket 17" has a. slot 29' through which the bar 14' mores.
In Fig. 7 the device is open and maintained against closing by the engagement of the pin 16 with the upper offset 38 of the slot 19', its passage through the hint 19 be.- ing blockedby tin com finger as clearly shown. If. however, the lid is desired clmmrl it is first raised sli htly which nnscnts. the
pin 16 from the 0 'set 3 and causes it to more in the slot .21 until it engages the end thereof. Continued movement of the pin or until it engages the lower end of ollsct 28' causes the cum to rotate but this in turn hm; braking action upon the pin nd bar. Th cum HlHWffi until the end of the slot 351 registers with the slot 15) so that the down ward movement Lllltl ('lOrsIHP. of the lid is ermittcd whcn the )in moves in siot 21" 1,eos,441
and 19. An the in asses into the slot 19' the cam is caused t 1 pin to rotate slightly further bringing the slot 22' also into registry with the slot 19' so that upon opening the lid, the pin 16 will pass downwardly into slot 22. Continued nmwnient of the pin engages the end of the slot 22 which rotates the cam with the )osition shown in full lines in Fig. 7 wherehy its exit is prei'cnted. llngngexnent with the end of the slot has a braking action upon further movenwut of the bar and lid. From engagement with the end of the slot 22" the lid and bar are dropped slightly so that the pin falls into the recon; 28' and the lid ig maintained open as described.
What I claim is:
In wmhinution with a hinged cover of a box or the. like. u covey support including a her having one of its ends pivotally connez-ted to the cover, a bracket sup orted by the box. said bracket having a (epending slotted portion, a cum pivotally connected to the dependingslotted portion, said cam having lots adapted to register with the slot of the depending ortion, and a pin carried by the free end 0 the pivoted bar for cooperuting with the slots of the cam and depending portion of the bracket for supporting the cover in a predetermined position.
In tastimony whereof I nflix my signature.
CARL- EDWARD WILTON.
