HENRY Y. VIETS, OF MADDOCK, NORTH DAKOTA.
SUPPORTING ATTACHMENT FOR NECK-YOKES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1919.
Application filed June 16, 1917. Serial No. 175,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Y. VrE'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maddock, in the county of Benson, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Attachments for Neck-Yokes; and I do her by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in vehicle tongues and has particular reference to a neck yoke supporting attachment therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved attachment for the tongues of vehicles of simple and inexpensive construction and attached to the tongue in such manner as to support the neck yoke in position when applied to the tip of the tongue and also prevent the driving reins or lines from becoming entangled with the tongue or neck yoke.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a vehicle tongue showing the invention applied thereto and in position to support a neck yoke.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the locking pin employed in connection with the invention.
Fig. 5 is a detail section through one of the locks, taken vertically.
In the drawing the numeral 5 indicates the tongue of the vehicle which may be of any desired construction and with which is associated the neck yoke 6 having the usual ring 7 which is secured to the tongue by the attachment which comprises the essential feature of the invention.
This attachment preferably consists of a pair of elongated clamping and supporting plates 8 and 9 semi-circular in cross section and shaped to conform to the end of the tongue and being secured thereto by means of bolts 10.
The lower plate 9 has depending from its forward end a pair of longitudinally alined and spaced retaining locks 11 and 12 which are adapted to receive therebetween the ring 7 of the yoke 6. These locks are preferably circular in cross section and the lower ends thereof are provided with key hole openings 13 and 14 respectively, that are alined longitudinally to receive the elongated locking pin 15 which is slidably mounted in the opening 13 and supported by the block 11 when in its unlocked position. Each end of the locking pin or rod 15 is provided with a lateral extension 16, one of which is adapted to be extended through the opening 14 in the block 12 when the pin is adjusted to locking position, after which said pin is given a half turn so that the extensions thereof will engage the blocks and prevent any sliding movement of the pin therein. lVhen in locking position this pin will bridge the space between the locks 11 and 12 and thus effectively retain the ring 7 between said blocks and through the medium of this construction it will be apparent that any entanglement of the driving reins with the yoke or its ring will be prevented.
What is claimed is An attachment for vehicle tongues including cooperating plates secured to the top and bottom of said tongue, retaining blocks depending from one of said plates in spaced relation and longitudinal alinement with each other, the lower ends of said blocks having alined openings extending therethrough, and a locking pin slidable in said openings to bridge the space therebetween whereby to retain a neck yoke ring between said blocks, said pin having lateral extensions at its ends projecting in the same direction and adapted to assume a depending position in engagement with said blocks after bridging said space whereby to prevent sliding movement of said pin relative to said blocks, one of said slots being formed for the passage of one of the extensions therethrough when said extension is out of depending position.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY Y. VIETS.
Witnesses:
EDWIN Wns'rBY, CARL TALLEFRAN.
