WHIFFLETREE-HOOK.
Application filed March 19, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PARROTT M. HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Aurora, in the county of Beaufort and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whitfietree-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to whiflle tree hooks and more particularly to that class wherein a locking means is provided to prevent the accidental removal of the trace eye from the hook.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device showing the keeper in locked position; Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section; and, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line m-x of Fig. 1.
In the drawings a sleeve 5 is provided which may be attached to a whifiietree and secured thereto in any suitable manner.
The numeral 6 indicates a hook extending from the sleeve having the ordinary bill 7. A trace eye 8 is shown on the hook. A barrel 9 is arranged on the top of the sleeve and formed integral therewith, a longitudinal groove 10 being provided in the inner wall of the barrel. A stop 11 extends into groove 10 to engage a retaining lug 12 which is formed on the keeper 13 adjacent the free end thereof. Ahandle 14 is formed on the keeper for operating the same.
It is therefore apparent from the drawings taken in connection with the above description that when the trace eye is placed on the hook 6 the handle 14 will be in the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this position the retaining lug 12 is in the longitudinal groove 10 and engaging the stop 11, said stop being provided to limit the outward movement of the keeper 13. When it is desired to lock the trace eye on the hook the keeper 13 is pushed forward in the mouth of the hook 6 and the handle 14 is turned downwardly, thereby Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 755,430.
engaging the retaining lug 12 with the front end of the barrel and preventing the keeper from being withdrawn from the barrel.
Should the operator find it necessary for any reason to hold the keeper 12 in a positive locking position the stop 11 may be screwed into engagement with the keeper to bind the same against the inner bore of the barrel.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a whiffletree hook, a barrel, supporting means for the barrel, a hook carried by the barrel, a keeper movable in the barrel and adapted for lapping engagement against the bill of said hook and having a retaining lug for engagement with the barrel to hold the keeper in locked position, said barrel having a longitudinal groove in its inner wall, a handle on one end of said keeper and remote from said lug adapted to turn the keeper for registering said lug with said groove whereby the keeper may be withdrawn when free.
2. A device as specified including a barrel provided with a longitudinally extending groove in its inner wall, a hook associated. with said barrel, a keeper mounted for movement in said barrel and provided with a lug thereon for holding the keeper from displacement in the mouth of the hook, a handle carried by the latter to register the lug with the groove of the barrel, and means extended through the wall of said barrel and into said groove, to lie in the path of said lug for preventing the accidental displacement of said keeper.
3. In a whifiletree hook, a barrel provided with a longitudinal groove in its inner wall, a keeper slidable in the barrel and having a retaining lug at one side adapted to register with and travel in said groove, a hook Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
carried by the barrel a handle on said to permit removal of the keeper therefrom keeper for sliding the same into the mouth at the option of the operator. in of the hook and adapted to turn said lug In testimony whereof I aflix my signature out of registry With said groove and a stop in presence of two Witnesses.
carried by the barrel Within said groove PARROTT M. HARDY. adapted to prevent the accidental removal Witnesses:
of said keeper when retracted, said stop l/V. A. THoMrsoN,
being detachably associated with the barrel R. H. TINGLE.
