WHIFFLBTREE HOOK.
N0. 394,998. Patented Dec. 25, 1888.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLARD V. REED, OF LOVVILLE, NElV YORK.
WHLFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 394,998, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed A st 29, 1888. $erial No. 284,062. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLARD V. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vhiliietree-Hooks and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in whiffletree-hooks; and it has for its object to generally improve upon the construction and to render more efficient in operation this class of devices.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar combinations and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improvement as in actual use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the whiflietree end, showing the arrangement of the parts. i
Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 a top plan view, of the whiiiietree-hook detached, the
same being partly in section.
Fig. 5 is a peri spect-ive view of the same with the parts dej ends to engage a recess formed in the end of tached, but in their relative positions.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the end of a whiftletree of ordinary and well-known construction.
B is a metallic bar or red, the body orshank of which is screw-threaded to engage a screwthreaded opening formed in the end of the whiffietree. The upper face of the bar B at its outer end is mortised, so as to form the open-ended chamber 0, which chamber is provided atone of its sides with a vertical slot, D.
E is a lug or latch of a width sufficient to enable its being fitted loosely within the recess 0, Where it is pivoted upon the pivot a,
passed horizontally through the sides of the chamber. The upper face of this latch when in position to receive the trace is flush with the upper face of the bar B, and the rear end of the latch is rounded, as shown, so as to permit its free movement upon the pivot. The lower face of the latch is beveled or rounded as it approaches the end, so as to form anarrow or contracted end adapted to receive the trace. The face of the latch adjacent to the slot D is cut away, so as to form a shoulder, F, for a purpose which will presently appear.
G is a spiral spring arranged upon the pivot a, one end of which spring bears against the head of the pivot and its opposite end against the side of the latch opposite the side which is provided with the shoulder F.
The operation of the device is as follows: The latch having been pressed downward or into the position necessary in order to attach the trace, the hole in the end of the trace is passed over the end of the latch, which is at once pressed upward into a vertical position. The tension of the spring against the side of the latch will cause the portion Z) to enter the vertical slot D, and the shoulder F will bear directly against the inner face of the slot, thus locking the latch securely in place.
hen it is desired to unfasten the trace, the latch may be readily released by a slight side pressure against the tension of the spring, when it maybe readily turned so as to occupy a horizontal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new is The whiftletree-hook herein described, consisting of a rod screw-threaded at one of its the whiflietree and having at its opposite end a recess or chamber provided at one of its sides with a vertical slot, as D, a latch pivoted within said chamber and provided with a shoulder, F, and a spring adapted to bear against the side of the latch and cause the shoulder upon the latch to engage the side of said slot, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
