Description

PATENTED DEG. 12, 1905. W. B. SMITH.
YIELDING DRAFT GLEVIS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.26. 1905.
Kaff@ UNITED sTATEs PATENT* oEEIoE.
WILLIAM B. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
YIELDING DRAFT-CLEVIS.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Yielding Draft-Clevis, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which corresponding letters of reference in the different figures indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple form of yielding draft-clevis which shall be especially applicable for use upon a doubletree and which shall be so constructed that it may be easily and cheaply manufactured and that parts thereof may be replaced when broken or destroyed, all of which is hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a whilIletree and a portion of a doubletree, showing my improvement connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fitting adapted to be attached to a doubletree and forming a part of said clevis. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view of said clevis as it would appear when attached to a doubletree. Fig. 4 is a like view of a modification of said invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rear end of one of the tubes, showing the rear bearing extension thereon.
Referring to the drawings, L a represent two metal tubes which are open at the rear ends and provided with central restricted openings at the front ends, thereby forming stops or shoulders Z) Z to serve as rests for the forward ends of spiral springs@ c. A draft-bar CZ, preferably provided with a loop e at its middle, is connected with the forward ends of said tubes by means of bolts ff, which are projected loosely through bores in the ends of said draftbar and extended through the coils of said springs to the rear ends thereof, where washers 4g g, held in place by means of nuts /t ZL, serve vopposite sides of a doubletree 7c, t the back of which, near each end, is rigidly attached a fitting Z, having rearwardly-extended lugs m Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 26, 1905. Serial No. 242,749.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
m, which are intended to be flush with the upper and lower1 faces, respectively, of said doubletree. Elongated openings n n are adapted to receive the lugs f, which when the parts are assembled are projected loosely therethrough in the manner shown, being retained in place by means of the extensions j. The parts z' are circular in cross-section or at least curved upon their front faces, which bear directly against and hinge upon the part Z, so that the forward end of the clevis is free to be moved laterally in either direction.
In placing the device upon a doubletree the fitting Z is first attached to the back thereof. The several parts of the clevis being disconnected, the lugs c' are rst inserted in the openings in the parts m. The springs are then placed within the tubes and the draft member Z connected with said tubes in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 3. In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of said invention in which in place of the lugs c' I have substituted rear extensions 0 0, which are bored to receive a bolt p, which bolt may be used in connection with the fitting Zor with the usual vertical bore in a doubletree.
My improved device possesses the advantages among others that it may be cheaply -constructed andthe parts are interchangeable. Should one of the tubes be broken, another maybe substituted therefor without sacrificing other parts. Moreover, the distance between the tubes may be varied to fit doubletrees of different thicknesses by substituting fittings Z and draftbars Z of the desired lengths.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. Inadevice of the class described, the combination with a doubletree of a metal fitting attached to the rear thereof, said fitting being provided with rearwardly-extended lugs having openings therein, a clevis consisting of two separable tubes restricted at the front ends to form interior stops, springs within said tubes, a draft member at the front ends of said tubes extending from one to the other, means for connecting said draft member to the rear ends of said springs, extensions upon the said tubes and means for securing the engagement thereof with said lugs.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a doubletree of a metal fitting attached to the rear end thereof, said tting being provided with rearwardly-extended lugs having openings therein, a clevis consisting ICO IIO
of two separable tubes restricted at the front ends to form interior stops, springs Within said tubes, a draft member at the front ends of said tubes extending from one to the other, means for connecting said draft member to the rear ends of said springs, extensions upon said tubes, said extensions being bent at right angles to said tubes, and means upon said eX- tensions for insuring the operative engagement thereof with said lugs when the parts are assembled.
3. Inadevice of the Class described, the Combination with a doubletree of a metal fitting attached to the rear thereof, said fitting being provided with rearwardly-extended lugs having openings therein, a elevis consisting of two separable tubes restricted at the front ends to form interior stops, springs Within said tubes, a draft member at the front ends of said tubes extending from one to the other, means for connecting said draft member to the rear ends of said springs, and extensions upon said tubes, said extensions being bent at right angles to said tubes and provided in turn with a projection or enlargement upon the end at right angles thereto, whereby they may be loosely inserted within the openings in said lugs and retained therein when the parts are assembled.
In testimony whereof` I have signed this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 24th day of January, 1905.
WILLIAM B. SMITH.
