INVENTOR WITNESSES 50/0/22 0/2 fie ola/zsfgg ATTORNEY SOLOMON REPLAJNSKY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
WAIS'I'BAND.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed August 10, 1917. Serial No. 185,536.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SOLOMON RErLANsKY, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Waistbands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to waist bands for garments and particularly to that class used in connection with ladies skirts or the like and has for its principal object, the provision of a take-up or gathering portion in the form of an elastic tape which is stitched or otherwise suitably secured to the waist line of the garment so that under its normal action, the same will operate to gather the material and snugly draw or adjust the garment at said waist line against the body of the wearer, combining with said portion, mating inelastic tapes secured to the garment and adapted to firmly embrace the body of the wearer at the waist line and render the skirt inactive against outward distention so as to prevent accidental derangement of the skirt when applied. In this manner, it is seen that a garment when constructed along these lines will be adjustable to various conditions and sizes it will assume a uniform and tailored fit at the waist line and can be readily adjusted at the convenience of the user without necessitating costly alterations in the garment.
I'Vith the above and other objects in View which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a skirt showing the application of the invention thereto.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the waist band of the skirt fully distended.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the inelastic tapes slightly separated from the waist line and garment for the purpose of clearness of illustration.
Fig. 4 is a side view of portions of the inelastic tapes.
Fig. 5 is a section therethrough.
As stated, the invention is particularly intended for use in connection with outer garments such as ladies skirts but it is desired that it be understood that this is only a single illustration of one mode of application of the invention. It may be advantageously used in connection with undergarments such as petticoats and the like.
The skirt 1, is provided with a waist band 2, having ample fullness to permit of its distention and contraction in order that it may be let out or taken in to suit the comfort of the wearer. At the back of the waist band is stitched or otherwise suitably secured, an elastic tape 3, the ends of which terminate at about the hip lines. This tape operates under its inherent quality to gather the garment and snugly cause the same to assume a tailored-like fit around the waist of the wearer.
In order to prevent casual distention of the garment at the waist line and thereby eliminate any possibility of casual derangement of the garment, use is-made of mating inelastic tapes 4 and 5, each having one end 6, permanently fixed to the garment inside the waist line. The opposite ends of the tapes are arranged so as to overlap one another, the tape 4, having a loop 7, which receives the free end of the tape 5. To one side of the loop, the said tape 4, is provided with superposed rows of eye members 8, the said members being substantially spaced apart in order that some nicety will be estab lished in their co-acting relation with hooks 9, on the free ends of the tape 5, to bring the entire waist band snugly and yet comfortably in embracing contact with the body of the wearer.
By combining the two features of the invention, namely, the elastic tape 3, and the mating inelastic tapes 4 and 5, the garment is rendered adjustable to various sizes, the maximum of which being the limit of adjustment of the inelastic tapes. The in elastic tapes and the said elastic tape are preferably of flat form and they are adapted to come closely together when in use so as to prevent discomfort to the wearer.
What is claimed as new is A garment having an elastic flat tape stitched thereto on the inside of its Waist engaging portion, the back of the Waist engaging'portion being gathered With respect to said tape, said tape normally contracting said Waist engaging portion, an inelastic Copies of this patent flat tape overlying said elastic tape and secured thereto throughout its length, a second inelastic tape overlying said first named inelastic tape and divided to provide overlapping ends, and means for adjustably connecting said overlapping ends to prevent the Waist engaging portion from distending beyond a desired predetermined degree.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 20
