Description

(1.0. PETERSON. DOOR FASTENERK APPLICATION FILED MAY 23,1916.
P atentedf'Apr. 15,
CHARLES C. PETERSON, OF TOMPKINS, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed May 23, 1916. Serial No. 99,425.
b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. PETERSON, a subject of the King of England, residing at Tompkins, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to im provements in door fasteners, and has for this object to provide a device of this character which can be temporarily used for securing doors which are not provided with keys.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one a person can carry in the pocket in case of emergency.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be carried upon a key ring and will be always at hand for use in case the door of a room lacks the usual locking facilities.
It sometimes occurs that a person will go to a hotel and will find that the door of his room lacks a key or other suitable locking device, and it is to overcome this annoyance that the present device has been perfected.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dev1ce.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through a door frame and door showing the device when in use in connection therewith.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The device consists of a plate 1, said plate being formed from a single strip of sheet metal and is bent intermediate its ends, and the bend thereof is cut away as at 2 so as to provide vertically alined eyes 3. The outer end of the plate 1 is bent at right angles to provide a hook 4:. A wire frame 5 is provided and has its bar 6 pivotally engaged in the eyes 3, said frame being adapted to be engaged on a key ring should it be desired.
A bar 7 is provided and has its inner end provided with spaced extensions 8, said extensions being provided with eyes 9 which pivotally engage the bar 6 of the frame 5, said bar 7 being adapted to engage the door 10, and toprevent slipping of the bar 7 when engaged with the door, the outer end thereof is provided with spurs 11 which bite into the oor.
A second bar 12 is provided and has its inner end provided with a sleeve 13 which pivotally engages the bar 6 of the frame 5 between the eyes 9 of the bar 7. The bar 12 is shorter than the bar 7 since it is designed to engage the casing of the door frame, and has its outer end provided with a tooth 14: which is adapted to bite into the casing to prevent the same from slipping.
Thus it will be seen that the frame 5 not only serves as means for pivotally connecting the plate 1, bars 7 and 12, but also serves as means for connecting the device to a key ring.
In use the hook 4: is engaged in the lock plate 15 after which the door 10 is closed. An arm 7 is engaged with the door and the arm 12 with the casing thereby firmly fastening the door so that it cannot be opened from the outside.
I claim A door fastener comprising a plate formed from a single strip of material bent upon itself to provide eyes which are spaced by recessing one end of the plate, the extremities of said strip being bent to provide a hook adapted for engagement with the lock plate of a door, a looped frame having a portion engaging in said eyes, a bar having one end bifurcated to form extensions having eyes at their extremities for receiving said portion of the frame, and a second bar having an eye at one end to close between said extensions and receiving said portion of the frame, said bars having pivotal movement about said portion and being adapted for engagement with a door and casing therefor.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES C. PETERSON.
