CANDLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed July 16, 1918. Serial No. 245,146.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, GRovER CLEVELAND AUNcsT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to a candle holder.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a candle holder with means for automatically feeding or imparting movement to the candle in the holder, during the time it is being consumed in burning, so as to maintain the upper or burning end at a predetermined position in the holder, and providing means of consuming the grease while the candle is burning.
Another object is to provide a candle holder that is constructed to prevent rodents or other similar animals from destroying or injuring the candle, whether the candle is being used for the purpose intended or not.
A further object is to construct a simple, economical and efficient candle holder. compactly, for the purpose of economizing in the space required to handle, use, or for conveniently transporting same,
These and other objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the candle holder showing the casing with a part broken away to more clearly show the construction of the operating mechanism of the candle holder.
Fig. 2 is a View of a modification of Fig. 1 showing the casing provided with slotted openings instead of circular perforations.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1.
In the drawings reference numeral 1 represents a casing which is preferably made of non-corrodible metal such as galvanized iron or the like.
The casing is provided with a series or plurality of perforations or lotted opening 2, and an annular inturned flange 3, is provided on one end of the casing. At a predetermined point at the opposite end of the casing bayonet slots 4 are preferably pressed or formed in the casing.
A cup shaped member 5 is provided and adapted to telescope within the casing 1, and it is provided with an annular outwardly extending flange 6 which stops and limits the telescopic movement of the cup shaped cally opposed projections or tits 7 are provided on the exterior of the cup shaped member to aline with and slidably fit the opposed bayonet slots. An open or expanded coil sprlng 8 is seated in the cup shaped member and fastened to the upper surface of the bottom 9 thereof as shown in Fig. l in any well known manner.
A supporting plate 10 is preferably fastened to the upper or free end of the coil sprmg. A spike '11 preferably made rectangular in form is secured to the lower face of the bottom 9 of the cup shaped member by any well known fastening means. The spike is used for the purpose of penetrating the soil to hold and maintain the candle holder in the place and position desired.
The candle is indicated'by reference numeral 12 and the concave portion thereof by numeral 13.
In the operation or use of the candle holder a candle12 of standard size is inserted in the casing 1, and the upper end thereof is forced in contact with theflange ,-the cupped shaped member 5 is then inserted or telescoped and the coil spring which is supported and carried by the cupped shaped member is .compressed to produce a tension or pressure upon the bottom of the candle through the medium of the supporting plate. When the stop on the cup shaped member contacts with the lower portion of the casing the cup shaped member is given a slight turn forcing the projections or tits 7 to enter the right angular portions of the bayonet slots thereby securely attaching and locking the cup shaped member to the casing with the coil spring under compression. The tension or pressure is constantly being exerted upon the bottom of the candle thereby automatically forcing the end of the candle in contact with the flange, as the candle is being burned, and the grease consumed by the burning wick.
The end of the candle is shown at 13 as suming a concave form, when burning which is due to automatically maintaining the burning end of the candle in contact with the annular inturned flange 3, and the means of permitting the free circulation of air around the candle through the medium of the perforations or slots 2 formed in the casing.
It will be observed that the candle holder while burning, in a predetermined position within the casing, and spike, secured to the cup shaped member, a bayonet slot mechanlsm formed on the cup shaped member and casing to removably fasten said parts together.
2. In a sheet metal holder, a casing provided with a seriesfof ventilating openings, a cup shaped member, means to removably attach the cup shaped member to the casing; said casing being provided with an inturned flange, a candle, means to yieldingly maintain the candle in contact with said flange, and means adapted to penetrate the soil, secured to the cup shaped member and removable as a unit from the casing with the cup shaped member.
3. In an article of manufacture, a casing provided with an inturned flange, a cup shaped member, means to connect same to the casing, a candle slidably fitted Within '4. A candle holder comprising in combination a perforated casing provided with a series of perforations, an inturned flange and bayonet slots, a cup shaped member provided with tits to cooperate with said bayonet slots to fasten and lock both elements .to
gether, a spike attached to the cupshaped member and removable from the casing with the cup shaped member, a stop provided on the cup shaped member, and means attached to the cup shaped member which is adapted .to exert a pressure upon said candle to maintain it constantly, but yieldingly in contact with the flange of the casing.
5. A candle holder comprising in combination a perforated casing, an inturned flange, and bayonet slots, a cup shaped member provided with tits to cooperate with said bayonet slots to fasten and lock both elements together, a stop provided on the cup shaped member, means attached to the cup shaped member which is adapted to exert a pressure upon said candle to maintain it constantly, but yieldinglv in contact with the flange of the casing, a supporting plate secured to said means, and means on the cup shaped member removable from the casing therewith to penetrate the soil to maintain the holder in position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
