To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERIN J. MYERS, a citizen of the United States,

in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Gromet-Punch, of whicbthe-following is a specification.

The ob ect of my invention is to provide a novel punch to make center holes and needle holes in canvas and other materials where hand sewed gromet rings are used, and which will enable a person with no previous experience to put in gromets at the same speed as an experienced sailmaker. As sailmakers and persons experienced in sewing gromets are very scarce, the device is an exceedingly useful one.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a punch handle 1 having a head 2, provided with a slotted portion-3. A center punch 4: exteriorly threaded at one end is screwed to the threaded portion 11 of punch head 2.

A ring 6, having a threaded portion 10 is mounted on the threaded portion 12 of center punch 4:; and an awl ring 7, having a threaded portion 10 is mounted in abutment with ring 6 on threaded portion 12 of punchv 4. Awl ring 7 is provided with an annular series of openings 9 in which are mounted suitable awls 8. The awls are snugly fitted in awl ring 7, but may be forced out by driving upon them, as indicated in Fig. 6, for the purpose of sharpening them when required. Awl ring 7 and punch 4 are removable also for the purpose of substituting a different size ring and different size punch in the same handle when a different size gromet is required. Punch 4 has a channel 5 for the passage of material punched to the slotted portion 3 of the head 2, from whence it is residing at discharged without interrupting the opera tion-of the device. The punch 4, may also be readily removed for purposes of sharpening when required.

The work of hand sewing gromet rings in canvas where hand sewed gromet rings are used has heretofore required that the center hole first be cut or punched, and then the sailmakers sew in the metal rings by forcing the threaded needles through the canvas, which on heavy work is difficult and appli cant has had the greatest difliculty in finding workmen with the necessary experience to properly perform it. This procedure is simplified, and the center hole and individual needle holes for the stitches are punched simultaneously with my device; with the further advantage that the needle holes are spaced apart at exactly uniform intervals and each gromet has the same number of stitches. Any number of needle holes may be made by putting on different sized awl rings. And the work may be performed rapidly by persons without previous experience in the sewing of gromets. If any of the awls 8 become dull, bent or broken they may be readily removed and replaced as above described.

What I claim is:

1. In a gromet punch, the combination of a handle device, said handle device having a slotted portion in communication with the hollow portion of a center punch, a hollow center punch, and an annular series of spaced awls arranged about the center punch and carried by the handle device. 7 2. In a gromet punch, the combination of a handle device having a head provided with a slotted portion in communication with the channel of a center punch for the discharge of material therefrom, a channeled center punch mounted in the handle device and having its channel in communication with the slotted portion of the handle head for the discharge of punched material, and an annular series of spaced awls arranged about the center device and carried by the handle.

3. In a gromet punch, of a handle device, a channeled center punch releasably mounted thereto, a ring threaded on the center punch, an awl ring also threaded on the center punch below the first mentioned ring, said awl plate carrying a series of spaced awls.
