Description

I. MACLEAN.
BUTTONHOLE SCISSORS. APPLxcATloN FILED mi, 2o. 1911.
l ,256, 9 l 6 Patented; Feb. 19, 1918.
Irren/e- MacLean,
IRENE VIVLACLEALI', OF VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA.
BUTTONHOLE-SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed February 20 1917. Serial No. 149,739.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, IRENE MACLEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van Nuys, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole-Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to scissors, more particularly button-hole scissors for making button-holes, and the objects of my invention are; first, to provide means in connection with the ordinary or conventional button-hole scissors for marking the cloth adjacent the button-hole for guiding the seamstress in working the buttonhole; second, to provide a means of this class which performs the operation in the same operation of the scissors in cutting the buttonhole; third, to provide a means of this class which is simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to operate and efficient in its action.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of my scissors complete. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig 3 is a side view of a fragmentary portion of one of the scissor blades, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a piece of cloth showing the button-hole cut by the scissors and the markings in connection therewith.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
rIhe scissor blade l, pins 2, blade 3, and pins t constitute the principal parts of the cutting and marking portion of my scissors, the other parts being of the conventional type.
The cutting portion of the blade 1 is of Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the the conventional shape and formed with a beveled cutting edge except that it is provided with a shoulder la upon which is mounted a plurality of pins 2 spaced apart a suitable distance for marking each stitch in forming the button-hole. These pins 2 extend downwardly parallel with the cutting edge of the blade l and .slightly past the cutting edge of the blade, as shown in the drawings. The blade 3 is similarly constructed and provided with a shoulder fr upon which is mounted a plurality of pins 4 similarly spaced and positioned. These pins 2 and l are covered with a powder or chalk of any kind suitable for leaving a mark where the pins 2 and l penetrate the cloth adjacent the button-hole so that when the scissors are removed from the cloth there is left a button-hole with a series of marks spaced apart as a guide for working the button-hole, the marks on one side of the button-hole being on one side of the cloth and on the other side of the button-hole being on the opposite side of the cloth.
It is obvious that with this device there is provided means for marking the sides of the button-hole at the same time that it is cut in the cloth, for aiding the seamstress in working the button-hole, and that the device is simple and economical of construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In button-hole scissors, the combination with the conventional button-hole scissors of a plurality of spaced pins adjacent each cutting edge of said scissors, extending slightly past said cutting edge and adapted to penetrate the cloth adjacent the sides of said `cutting edge and mark the same.
2. In button-hole scissors, the combination 0f a pair of beveled cutting blades, a plurality of pins spaced apart in rows respectively adjacent the cutting edges and adapted to mark the cloth adjacent the button-hole on opposite sides of said cloth and on opposite sides of said button-hole.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of January 1917.
Mns. IRENE MACLEAN.
