METHOD 0F FORIVIING- PLOW-HANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,131, dated May 24, 1859'.
T o all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MATTHEWS, of York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Forming or Cutting Plow- Handles and Similar Articles of Irregular Forms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention taken in the line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of two rotating cutter heads provided with novel cutters and used in connection with a carriage in which the stuff to be operated upon is centered and which carriage is provided with a pattern to actuate one of the cutter heads, the aXis of which is fitted in movable bearings.v By this arrangement, as will` be hereinafter fully shown and described, the stud is fed to the cutters and the movable cutter head adj usted by the forward movement of the carriage, and both the carriage and cutter heads operated from a single driving shaft-the whole forming a very simple and efficient machine for the desired purpose.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular frame, in the lower part of which a driving shaft, B, is placed. On the upper part of said framing a carriage, C, is placed, and fitted between suitable guides, o o. This carriage has a rack, Z), attached to the lower part of one of its sides, and into this rack a pinion, c, gears, said pinion being on a shaft, D, the inner bearing of which is in an adjustable arm, E, attached to the framing, said arm being kept in an elevated state, and the pinion, c, in gear with the rack, b, by means of a spring-catch, CZ. The upper surfaces of the sides, c c, of the carriage, C, are of curved form as shown at f f f, Fig. l, corresponding to a longitudinal profile of the work to be cut or formed by the machine.
On the frame, A, and at each side of the carriage, C, there is a standard, F. These standards are permanently secured to the frame, A, and they each are provided with a curved slot or opening, g, whichv are parts of circles of which the aXis'of a shaft, 7c, the bearings of which are inthe standards, is at the center. Inv the curved slots, g, of the standards, F, there are bearings, '71 z', one in each. These bearings are allowed to slide freely in the slots, g, and the journals of a shaft, G., are fitted in said bearings. Between the standards, F F, a shaft, y', is fitted or placed, said shaft, j, being below theshaft 7L.

7c, at one end of theshaft B, and around pulleys, Z, m, n, on the shafts y', it, G, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, by which arrangement these shafts are driven or rotated by the same belt H.
In each side of the carriage, C, an oblong slot or opening, 0, is made so as not to permit the shaft, j, to interfere with the movement of said carriage. The shaft, D, is driven from the shaft, B, by means of a belt, 20. On the two shafts G, y', cutter heads, I I', are placed, one on each shaft. These cutter heads may be described as being of S-form, the shafts passing through their centers-see Fig. l. Each cutter head has a V-shaped groove, g, made in its periphery, said grooves extending nearly to the shafts of the cutter heads, andto each end of each cutter head a cutter is attached. Each cutter head is provided with two cutters, r, s, the cutting edges of which conform to a transverse section of the grooves, g, and may be described as being of U-form, each cutter corresponding to one half of atransverse section of the work which iscut or formed by the machine. The form of these cutters is plainly shown in Fig. 2, and it will be seen that one cutter, 7', of each head has serrated edges, and the other cut-ter, s, smooth edges. The two cutters heads, I I', are in line with each other or in the same plane, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and the stu J, shown in red, is secured longitudinally in the carriage, C, and in the cutting plane of the heads I I', as shown clearly in Fig. 2. To one side of thecarriage, C, at one end, aprojection K is attached and to the inner side of each bearing, z' z', in the curved slots, g, a pin, t, is attached.
The operation is as follows: The stuff, J, is got out in proper form and secured longitudinally in the carriage, C, in the cutting plane of the cutting heads, I I.
Motion is given to the shaft,` B, in any proper manner and the cutter heads, I I, are rotated by the` belt.
