AUNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE. N
JOSEPH FRANCIS CHEVALIER, F LAKELAND, KENTUCKY.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Y To all whom t may concern:
'at its end with a jaw 2.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. CHEvALmR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeland, in the county of Jeii'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful. Pipe-Wrench, of which the following is a specification. l
The device forming the subject matter oi this application is a wrench, and the invention aims to provide novel means f or holding an auxiliary member carrying a. jaw, in adjusted relation to the fixedjaw of the wrench.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains. i
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a top plan of the wrench; and Fig. 3 is a. cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The wrench comprises a handle 1 supplied The handle is provided with ears 5 connected by a pivot element 6 which may be a bolt.
An auxiliary member 3 is located between the ears 5 and is provided with an angularly disposed jaw 4 adapted to coperate with the yj aw 2. In one of its edges, the auxiliary .member 3 is supplied with seats 7, in any one of which, the pivot element 6 may .be
lmounted, for adjustment. The auxiliary member is provided intermediate its ends with an overhanging lug 8 extended longitudinally of the said member. At its outer end, the auxiliary member 3 carries transversely disposed overhanging anges 9, the member 3 being outwardly beveled, at its end, between the flanges, as shown at 20.
A slide 10 is mounted for right line reciprocation beneath the flanges 9 on the edge of the meniber 3, and is supplied with a stop 11, which, cooperating with one of the anges 9,

prevents the slide from being withdrawn completely from beneath the flanges 9. A spring tongue 12 is superposed on the slide 10, the inner end 14 of the tongue being secured to the slide. The outer end of the tongue 12 lits closely between the flanges 9, as shown in Fig. 3. A projection 15 is mounted on the tongue 12 near to the outer end thereof and is adapted to slide in an opening 16 in the slide 10, the projection being beveled as shown at 19, and the projection being adapted to be received, terminally, in a seat 17 formed in the edge of the auxiliary member 3. The tongue l2 terminates in a Enger piece 18 of any desired construction.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Fig 1, the pivot element 6 is received in one of the seats 7 the slide 10 bridging the seats 7 to hold the pivot element in place in the selected seat. Thus, the auxiliary member 3 is mounted to swing on the handle l. One end of the slide 10 is received beneath the lug 8, and the projection 15 on the tongue 12 engages in the seat 17 to prevent. the slide 10 from being retracted.
When it is desired to adjust the distance between the jaws f1 and 2, the outer end of the tongue 12 is raised by means of the linger piece 18, the projection 15 thus being retracted out of the seat 17. The slide 10 may now be drawn backwardly, uncovering the notches or seats 7 in the member 3, w 1ereupon the pivot element 6 may be shifted to one notch or seat to another, thus bringing about the desired adjustment. The slide 10 is advanced until its inner end is received beneath the lug 10, the beveled end 19 of the projection 15 cooperating with the beveled portion 20 of the member 3 to guide the projection into the seat 17 The tongue 12 fits closely between the flanges 9, and, consequently, if the iinger piece 18 should be struck forcibly, the projection 15 will not be bent and be rendered incapable of engaging readily in the seat 17 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A Wrench comprising a handle having a jaw; a pivot element carried by the handle; an auxiliary member having a jaw coperating with the jaw of the handle and provided in one edge with seats in any one of which said pivot element may be mounted; a slide mounted for right line reciprocation on the auxiliary member and bridging the seats to hold the pivot element therein; and means for Securing the slide releasably against re* traction. l 4 y y A l 2. A Wrench comprising a handle having a jaw; a pivot element carried by the handle; an auxiliary member having a jaw Coperating` yWith the jaw of the handle and prof vided in one edge With seats in any oneyof Which the pivot element may b'e mounted;l a slide mounted for right line reciproeation on the auxiliary member and bridging thefseats to hold the pivot element therein; a spring cpies of this patent may be obtained fof tong-ue carried by the slide; and a projection on the tongue, the auxiliary member having,` aseat'wherein the projetlon is received to prevent a retraction of the slide.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' as my own, I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
