CHAIN WRENCH.

This invention has reference to wrenches of the type known in the trade as chain pipe wrenches..
The main obj ect of the invention is to provide a wrench or" the chain type, wherein the. chain is passed around the pipe or; other object and secured to the body thatcarries a handle, and a` handle-being `in a neutral position relativeto the pipe, when the handle is swung in one direction it will quicklygrip the pipe and turn it in that direction, and'` returning the handle tothe neutral position, in which its axis would intersect the axis of the pipe, the pipe is released; andv moving the handle` and'body while maintaining thisposition will permit a tree movement `of the` pipe, and then moving the handle in the same direction as previously the pipe will be again gripped and turned and which construction will; without any changein the position of the pipe Vwrench or chain,.by merely swinging the handle in the opposite direction relative to the neutral position, will cause rigid engagement with the pipe to turn it in the opposite direction; and swinging the handle back to neutral position `will release the pipe when the wrench can be advanced to get another bite on the pipe and turn it in this direction a further `distance.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which va minimum amount of movement ot' the handley is necessary to cause a tightv grip on the article, and a slight retraction will release the grip and permit another bite to be had on the article, and which movement is reversible to turn the article in eitherl direction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which there are no relatively movable portions. en cept the cha-in and its adjustable connections withfthe body of the wrench, whereby'various sizes of articles can be engaged on a comparatively large range.

Slots 24, 25, are formed in the two members extendingacross this slot and admit a ring nut 26 threaded to engage the bolt 22.
It will be readily seen that the bolt can be inserted from the front end `into this slot with the nut placed across the slot, and as the nut is turned the bolt will be drawn back toward the handle and draw on the chain, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the use of a device, the article such as a pipe 30 is placed against the jaws 'i31 and 11i. see Fig, 3. rlhe chain will be heldat one end by the bolt andthe tree end passed around thepipe, and then down into the slot containing the lugs S20, and the'pins on the chain are passed into the slot between plates, and the nut ring; 26 is turned to draw the chain into the body until it is comparatively taut on the pipe, with the wrenelrhandle in the projecting out'transverse to 1the pipe, `that is, the axis of the handle interscctingI the center of the pipe. Moving' the handle relative to the pipe in either direction will cause the aw on that side to press tight against the pipe, after a very limited or small swing; oi? the handle from the neutral position, and a tight grip is had on the pipe yto cause it to turn in such direction'. Merely swinging the handle back to neutral position trein this position will cause the engaged jaw to release, and keeping the handle in this neutral position the entire wrench can move back on the pipe free to engage the pipe at' another loca tion. Then the handle is given a swingin the same direction beyond the relative nentral'position, and it will again grip the pipe and turn it further in the saine rotative di rection, which is the usual ratchet. operation.
If it should be desired to turn this pipo or article inl the opposite direction, it is not nee essary to remove or adjust the wrench, but` the handle is merely swung in the opposite direction from its neutral position 'trom that. just described. .This will cause the other jaw, (in the direction to be turned).` to ,fg-rip the pipe, and a strong engagement will result to turn the pipe. Bringing the handle back to the neutral position will release troni this jaw and permit the wrench and chain to move back -i'or a grip in another position, then swinging the handle troni the neutral position will grip the pipe and canse it to turn iurtheimwhich is the usual ratchet op eration. j
A device of this character possesses .ejreat advantage over the` forms ot1 wrench wherein a relative movement is had between the handle and the jaw or body member. Sometimes a pipe is in a location ratherinaccessible. and
tnly a very limited swing of the handle is permitted. With my form of wrench the handle will grip the, article on a swing a Very short distance beyond the neutral position. Furthermore, this neutral position exists when the wrench projects outwardly with the handle anis interse(ftingjr the axis oi the pipe, in other words directly in trent of the same. Another advaiitape is that the device is instantly reversible, and to turn the pipe in either direction, the wrench does not need to be removed and turned over to opposite position ior use. i
It will be further inlderstood that the de vice isvery simple and strong, comprising,r merely the handle to which the two jaw -plates are secured, forming,l a very rigid compact construction. These members are cured by one or a. pair ot bolts. In addition the chain is merely added` being' attacl'ied to the body at one end portion by merely in sorting itspins in the slotted portion of the body; while the other end ot the chain is at tached by the easily adjustable bolt and nut. The latter can be nnscrewed and the chain removed at any time and also the nunja'tter the other three members have been assem bled. i
It will be further seen that the chain when adjusted is supported at one end by the link connection with the bolt, which connection is Sii brought in close proximity to the jaws where they engage the pipe. Theother end of the chain has the pins on a link held by the opposite lng walls in the body, and this point of connection between the chain and the body, is also in close proximity to the pipe or other article. As has been explained. in operation the pipe is held practically in this position, and the chain will 'wrap itself' around a comparatively large portion ot' the pipe practically up to the two placeswhcre the pipe isbeld by the jaws. It. has been found that by this arrangement it is practically impossible in turning a pipe to crush or dent the pipe, and it is not injured in the operation. lilith other fornisoi'- pipe wrenches the chain engages a relatively small part of the pipe and the pipe often becon'ies distorted, or crushed. i
