BENTLEY, CAN ADA.
WRENCH;
Application filed. aune ea ees. Serial No. 647,412.
This invention relates to an improved wrench, the general object of the invention being to providemeans whereby the movable jaw can be easily and quickly adjusted by pressure on a spring controlled dog so that it is not necessary to actuate a screw member. 1
. Another object of the invention is to make the wrench self-locking and to so form the parts'that itcan be used in-close quarters. I
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il-- lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. v v s In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein likecharaoters denote like or corresponding parts throughout, the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation ofmy ime proved wrench; A
Figure 2 is a similar view, the parts being broken away and illustrated incross section; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pivoted casing and Figure 4 is a perspective view of the pivoted dog. a
In these views 1 indicates a handle which has a stationary jaw 2 formed atits end,
the jaw part being extended above the handle and recessed, as at3, for receiving the rounded end of a dog 4 so that the dog is movably supported in the recess. I A casing 5 of U-shaped form is pivotally connected with the handle 1 by a single fastener 5 so that it can rock and thus provides rocking movement of the movable jaw 6, the
the. stem of the movable jaw has a projection 7 which slides onthe upper edge of the handle and it alsohas ratchet teeth 8. in its lower edge Which are engaged by the dog,a spring 9 holding the dog in engage push said body in an ad- V To operate the wrench the handle is held' with the jaw directly downwardly and then the release button is pressed so as to move position. To'release the wrench from a'nut or other object the button is'pressed upon and then thewrench can be moved off the object.
' From the. above it willbe seen'thatwe have produceda simpleand effective wrench which can be easily and quickly placed in engagement with an object and disengaged from said object.- I 7 It is thought from the foregoing descrip just as easily tion'that theadvantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understood that we may make changes in. the construction and in the combination andrarrangeinent of the several parts,,prov1ded that such changes fall within the-scope of the appendedclaim. What we claim is p s A wrench of the class described comprising a handle having a stationary jaw, one edge of which extends laterally beyond one edge of the handle, a U-shaped casing hav-' the dog into inoperative positionand then the movable jaw will drop to itswide open ing its side arranged against .the sides of the handle for free swinging movement'and piyotally connected with the handle in the rear'of the stationary jaw, a movable jaw having its shank passing through the casing with one edge of the shank sliding on the extended edge of the stationary jaw, a pro, 'jection on the inner end of the shank sliding on the edge of thehandlein the rear of the extended portion of the stationary an elongated opening in the casing and a jaw, teeth on the lower end of the shank spring carried by the handle for normally 10 an arcuate recess in the rear face of the exholding it in engagement With the teeth.
tended portion of the stationary aw, a dog mounted in said recess and its other end adapted to engage the teeth, a button connected With the dog and passing through In testimony whereof We afiix our signa 111 the casing having one end rockablv tures.
