Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS S. HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shade- Brackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in shade brackets, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that the brackets can be easily and quickly adjusted for use in connection with windows of different width and shades of different length.

A further object of the invention is to provide a shade bracket so constructed that the same can be adjusted without the aid of a tool and can be firmly held in any of its adjusted positions.

With these and other objects in view, this inventionresides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front View of a window equipped with the device.

The device consists of a base plate 1, which is formed from suitable metal and has its longitudinal edges bent so as to provide flanges 2, said flanges having their longitudinal edges bent parallel to the base, whereby oppositely disposed longitudinal channels 3 are provided. The devices for both sides of the window frame are identical in construction with the exception of the outer ends of the brackets 4:, which are formed with slots and bearings for engaging the ends of the shade roller, in the usual manner.

The brackets it have their inner ends provided with plates 5, said plates having their upper and lower edges provided with lugs 6, which are adapted to engage the parallel portions of the flanges 2. Bowed leaf springs 7 are riveted to the inner surfaces of the plates 5 and serve to yieldably hold the lugs 6 and shoulders 8 engaged with the flanges, said shoulders being formed upon opposite sides of the neck 9 of the bracket 4;, said neck being slidable in the slot 10 formed between the flanges 2.

When it is desired to adjust one of the brackets it is only necessary to force the same inwardly thus expanding the spring 7. After pressure is released upon the bracket the spring will force the lugs 6 and shoulders 8 into binding engagement with the flanges 2, thereby firmly holding the brackets in their adjusted positions.

Since the lugs and shoulders engage the adjacent portions of the flange 2 it is obvious that pressure on the outer ends of the brackets will tend to more firmly hold the lugs and shoulders engaged with the flanges 2, thereby preventing the brackets from slipping accidentally.

The brackets A are provided with seats 11 for removably supporting a curtain pole, when desired, as clearly shown in Fig. 4c of the drawing. In Fig. 3 the bracket is shown for use in connection with a shade roller, but it will be of course understood that this bracket can be made similar to the bracket shown in Fig. 4.

A curtain bracket comprising in combination, a base plate having vertical walls and inturned horizontal flanges to provide a slotted channel-way, and a bracket slidable in said channel-way, said bracket in eluding a slide plate having upturned flanges of less height than the vertical walls of the channel-way, and a bowed spring secured to the lower face of the slide plate and having its ends extended beyond the limits of the slide plate and into contact with the bottom of the channel-way before and behind the slide plate to resiliently support the latter above the bottom of the channel with the upturned flanges on the slide plate in contact with the flanges of the channel-way.
