Application filed February 16, 1918; Serial No. 217,480.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKA. Fnnnnnron, a citizen of the United States, and resident of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson" and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbeige-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garbage receptacles.
The primary object of this invention-is toproduce a garbage receptacle which will have a body substantially cylindricalin cross-section provided with a flattened portion at the rear thereof, with a cover conforming to the shape of the upper edge thereof and hinged to the body at a plurality of points along said flattened portion so thata rigid connection between the body and cover will be provided that will stand rough usage; and I also preferably provide" cooperating members on said'fla-ttened portion and cover for automatically fastening the cover to the body when the cover is swung into open position.
In a more intense aspect, my invention comprises the provision on such a body of stiffening ribs, having outwardly extending flanges which will coiiperate with similar stiffening ribs 011 the cover to act as guides for the purpose of bringing the automatic fastening members on the cover and body respectively into registration with each other.
Other features of novelty will appear from an examination of the drawing and the following analysis of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a receptacle embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the receptacle illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top of plan view'of the receptacle shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical section showing the cover in open, latched position; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2 showing the cover in open position and illustrating the cooperating guiding flanges on the cover and body.
Referring now to these drawings, 1 indicates a body of a garbage receptacle or the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 313, 18" 1919,
like which is cylindrical in cross-section, ex-
cept at the rear portion 2 which is flattened out as illustrated more particularly in Figs.
1, 2 and 5, saidfl'attened portion 2 permit tinga cover 3 to be hinged tothe body at a plurality of points so" as to form a rigid and durable hinge-connection therebetween. The cover 3 is cut away at the rear as shown at 3 in Fig. 3 to conform to the shape of the body 1 and is, as shown, provided with'a depending flange 3 at its perimeter, which flange is likewise cut away at the section" 3 so as to permit the 'hinging, without binding, of the cover to the said body. 1
The cover and body'respectively are provided with cooperating means forautomatically fastening the cover to the body when it is swung on its hinges into open position. As illustrated, the cover is provided with a fastening member 9 and the flattened section 2 ofthe body is provided with a spring fastening member 10 adapted to spring over the fastening member 9 on the cover to retain the same in open position during the process of emptying. the receptacle, and will thus be prevented from flapping up and down during such emptying process.
In the preferred form ofdevice illus- "trated, means is provided for guiding the automatiofastening members into registrat1on notwithstanding rough handling, and as shown, two stifi'ening ribs 5 5 are disposed vertically and parallel to each other along the flattened portion 2 of the said body and these ribs are provided with outwardly-extending flanges 6 6 which are adapted to cooperate with similar flanges 7 7 on ribs 8 8 on the cover 3 for the purpose of guiding into registration the fastening member 9 on the said cover with the fastening member 10 on the flattened section 2 of the said body 1. Other stiffening ribs 4 may also, if desired, be provided.
Any suitable means for providing a rigid and durable hinge connection between the cover and said flattened section may be employed. As illustrated in the preferred form of my invention shown in the drawing, the cover 3 is so hinged by the formation of knuckles 11 11 on the stiffening members 8 8 of the cover and the formation of complementary knuckles 12 12 on the stiffening members 6 6 of the flattened body section, a pintle 13 being inserted within and 006perating with said integral knuckles to provide rigid and durable hinges and a conabove said bottom to the rim thereof, a cover substantially round inco-nformation having a flattened portion registering with the flattene d portion of the body, and a pluralityof butt hinges connecting said cover and body located at said flattened portions. 2. A garbage receptacle embodying a barrel body substantially cylindrical in crosssection provided with a round bottom and a flattened portion extending. from I a point above said bottom to the rim thereof, a cover substantially conforming in shapewith said,
body, a plurality of butt hinges connecting said cover and body located at said flattened portion, and means on the flattened portion of the body for automatically fastening the coveragainst said body when the same'is swung into open position.
3. Agarbage receptacle embodying'abar v rel body substantially cylindrical in cross-" section provided with a round bottom and a flattened portion extending from a point above said bottom to the rim thereof, a cover substantially conforming in shape with said body, a plurality of butt hinges connecting said cover and body located at said flattened portion, fastening members on the coverand body respectively for automatically latching the'cover to'the body when it is swung into i open position against the side of said body,
and cooperating rib elements on the cover and body for guiding the fastening members into registration.
- 4. A garbage receptacle embodying a bar= rel body substantially cylindrical in crosssection provided with a round bottom and a flattened portion extending fromga point above said bottom to the rim thereof, a cover substantially conforming in shape with said cross-section of the body, a plurality of butt hinges connecting said cover and body 10- catedat said flattened portion, fastening members on the body and cover respectively for automatically latching the'coyer to'the body when it is swung into open position against the side of the body, and angle-iron stiffening members extending transversely.
on the cover and longitudinally on the body, said members having their outwardly extending flanges adapted to cooperate when the cover is swung into open position to guide the fastening members into registra-f tion. V I
