Teeth/whom it, may concern Be it known that I, Howannlu. KENNEDY, a citizen of. the. Unitedi States, residing.A at Fort Wayne inthe countyof Allen and State ot Indiana., have invented new anduseful Improvements inl Travelers" .Grips or Bags, ofwhich the followingis.aI full; clear, and exact'description. v i,
[My invention relates to imprlovementsuin sheet metal travelers?, gripslor cases, andrits object is to prevent moisture or` rain enten ing the same' when it is; closed, and tof th-is end to provide a hinge for-the covers of a peculiar and economical structure `which will not detract from the strength ofthe grip or case. rlhis l'l .accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described,-"and'as particularly pointed outin theclai-ms.
In the drawings: Figure lisa perspective view of a meta-l griip' or kitto which my i1n provements are applied. Fig. Q'is acrosssection of a fragment of said grip, drawn to a larger scale, andfembodyi-ng my'invention. Fig. 3 is a view simi-lar to-that shown in F ig. 2, illustrating a modified construction of my improvements.
The general structure of the sheet metal grip or kit to which my improvements are applied is the same as that set forth in application for Letters Patent of the United States, tiled June 8, 1914, Serial No. 843,675, and comprises a body-portion consisting of a suitable bottom, longitudinal side-walls A, and end-walls B. The upper edges of the latter extend above the top edges of the side-wall and are peaked, as shown, and the covers are hinged to the side-walls. One of said covers, D, extends torwithin a short distance of the truncated apex of the peaked upper edges of the end-walls B, and has its end edges flanged downward and adapted to lap over the inclined edges of one inclined edge of the peaked portion of said end-walls, when the grip is closed, substantially as shown. The 4other cover, E, extends from the side-wall, opposite that to which cover D is hinged, over the truncated apex of the peak, and down the opposite inoline until it reaches the upper edge of cover D, whereupon it is flared outward slightly and overlaps the adj acent'edges of the same. The end edges of cover D are also-flanged downwardly and lap over the opposite inclined edges of the peak, as shown, and the meeting edges of these covers are locked together `10i/means or suitable lacking. de#
vices, F, F., of` a well-known type. `At the ridge ofcover E itl is provided withl a suit-A able handle; `at about its center of'. length; These` covers, D and E, have their. lower. portionsa.. extend,` down past `the upper edges of sidefwal-ls A, and! the lower r edges` thereof are formed into knuckles Zi, Y), that areipivotallly` connected by a wire. pintle` c to the knuckles d of thefliingefplates e. The latten extends up over andl around the selvaged upperk edge ofv the side-walls ofthe bodyl of the grip. andfagainst the inner `surface thereoff, and are. secu-redr tosaid sideewallsyby rivets'r or otherwise. In Eifg 2, the. upper portions ofV the sidewalls extend; upward beyond Atheimeeting Iangle of the latte-r,` and the incline. ot `the `covers 'and` .the length of the hingesplateiis correspondingly increased so as tol-extend upfoverwand` around the urpper edge- 'of theinclined` portion and` to-` lap againstthe inner surfaceof .the` same. Ais thus constructed, it is impossible for rai-n. or wa-tento enter the grip through the hinged portion of the covers and grip.
ln Fig. Bof-the drawings, the upperedge of' the side-walls is shown to terminate at the angle of the inclined covers and sidewall, and in this event, the hinge-plate f does not have to be made as long as the hinge-plate e. This hinge-plate f, is secured to and laps against both the outer and inner surfaces of the upper portion of the side-walls in the same manner as it does in the construction shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as new is:
1. A sheet metal travelers grip having a a body comprising rectangular vertical longitudinal side-walls and end-walls which have their upper edges inclined upward from the sides to a central peak, and inclined covers hinged to the longitudinal sides below the upper edges of the latter, one of said covers having its upper edge extend over the peak of the top of the body and down the opposite incline and overlapping the top edge of the other cover and both of said covers having their lower marginal edges flanged downward to form vertical portions that overlap the top edges of the vertical .side-walls of the body.
' 2. A. sheet metal travelers grip having a body comprising rectangular vertical longitudinal side-walls, end-walls which have their upper edges inclined upward from the sides to a central peak, s and inclined covers yhaving their lower portions extend down past the upper edges of the said side-walls and lap against the outer surfaces thereof,
and having their lower edges provided with knuckles, hinge-plates lapping' against the covers having its upper edge extend over'the peak of the top V'of the body and down the opposite incline and overlappingy the top edge of the other cover and both of said covers having their end edges Vflanged downward and. overlapping the inclined top edges ofthe end-wall Y v A she'etrmetal travelers grip having a body comprising rectangularY vertical longitudinal side-walls, end-.walls which have .Y their upper edges inclined upward from the sides to a central peak, land inclined covers hinged to the longitudinal sides below the upper edges thereof, onevofv said covers having its upper edge-extend over the peak of the'top of the bodyv and down theopposite incline vandoverlapping. the top edge `of the other cover andlboth-of said covers having their lower marginal Yedges anged downward `to forni vertical portions that overlap the top edges ofthe side walls of the body; the upper portion of said side-walls extending upward/in an inclined direction toward necting the knuckles of the covers to those of said hinge-plates; one of said covers having its upper edge extend over the peak of the top of the body and down the opposite incline and overlappingthe top edge of the other cover and both ofsaid covers having their end edges flanged downward and overlapping the inclined top edges of the endwalls; the upper portion of said side-walls extending upward in an inclined direction toward the peak of the top of the grip under the covers.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this lst day of July, 1914.
HOWARD L. KENNEDY.
