JOHN A. SLAMA,
Patented June 21, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES C. LYNCH,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,952, dated June 21, 1904. Application filed April 8, 1901. Renewed March '7, 1904. Serial No. 196,987. (No model.)
1'0 (0M whom, it may concern:
Be itknown thatI, JOHN A. SLAMA,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 1 llinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges, and more particularly to hinges designed to be used on a wall trunk or the like, and has for its object the construction of a hinge of great strength designed to bind the corner of the trunk-body as well as to serve as a brace for the parts thereof.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described, and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the hinge in its closed position, the corner of a trunk being illustrated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is also a perspective view, but shows the position the hinge assumes when the lid or cover of the trunk is raised, which is also illustrated in dotted lines.
In said drawings, A indicates the bottom part or member of the hinge designed to be secured tothe trunk-body at one of the rear corners of the same and provided with a strap of metal a, which extends around the corner of said trunk and is secured by screws, rivets, or like means along theiend of the same. Said strap a is provided on the upper edge of the same with an upwardly-opening socket a. Said portion a is curved upwardly from said socket to the articulation with the upper portion of the hinge and forms an urnvardly-projecting shoulder adapted to engage a portion of the cover and acts to stay the same should the trunk receive a blow longitudinally on said cover. 7
The upper part or member of the hinge consists of a plate B, adapted to receive one of the trunk-slats B on the rear margin of the cover and provided with a downwardly-extending integral flange I), provided with parts which articulate with portions of the lower member'A, forming the joint. I) is a strap or end flange also integrally connected with the plate B and rear flange Z) and extending downwardly along the end of the cover and adapted to be secured thereto by means of screws, bolts, rivets, or the like. Said strap extends obliquely downward and forwardly to a point below the edge of the cover and is designed to overlap the upper margin of the trunk-body, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the lower extremity of the same is provided with a dowel b integral therewith and complemental with the socket a, in which the same engages, as
illustrated in Fig. 1, when the trunk is closed.
desired manner and constructed of anydesired material and, if preferred, may be provided with an enlarged knuckle or corner to serve as a bumper. If preferred, the strap 7) may be riveted to a valance C, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Many details of construction may be varied or modified without departing from the principle of my invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A hinge comprising two members one of which is adapted to be secured to the rear and end of a trunk-body and having parts thereof projecting above the upper edge of said end and wall and extending forwardly and downwardly on said wall to a point below said upper edge and an upper member comprising a plate provided with integral flanges, one of which extends along the rear margin of the cover and is adapted to be secured thereto and articulating with said lower member, the
other of which extends along the end of said cover forwardly of its rear margin and extends below the lower margin of the same in a position to overlap a part of the end of a trunk-body.
2. In a hinge, the combination with a lower member adapted to be secured along the rear side wall and one end of the trunk-body and extending from a point below the edge of said end wall diagonally upward above the same into position to overlap the end of the cover, of an upper member comprising a plate adapted to be secured on the cover and provided with flanges integral with said plate and with each other, one of which extends along the rear margin of the cover and articulates with said lower member to form the joint and the other of which extends along the end of said cover forwardly of the rear margin thereof and below said end into position to overlap the end wall of the trunk and is provided with a dowel adapted to interlock in a corn plemental socket in the top of said lower members, the said end members being complemental at their meeting edges and each overlapping both the end of the trunk and the end of the cover.
3. A hinge for a trunk, comprising an upper and a lower member articulated along the rear wall and top of the trunk, a flange on each of said members that on the lower member partly overlapping the end of the cover beneath the upper members and that of the upper member partly overlapping the end of the trunk-body above the lower member, said flanges interlocking with each other when the hinge is in a closed position and jointly acting to resist a blow either longitudinally or transversely of the cover, or both, and a dowel secured in one of said parts and engaging in the other.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. SLAMA.
