E. A. BENNETT.
CLOTHES LINE FASTENEB.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22. 1918.

InvenZbr Elmer JZfemzeZi! WW (M u lzbmeys ELMER A. BENNETT, OF CLIFTONDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLOTHES-LINE FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lvlar. 1S, 1919.
Application filed November 22, 1918. Serial No. 263,734.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1, Emma ADELBERT BEN- :vn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Cliftondale, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for adjustably securing clothes lines in place, and for releasing same when desired, and for conveniently permitting the removal of the clothes line from exposure to the atmosphere when not in use.
My invention will be more clearly understood after reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar parts are indicated by corresponding reference symbols throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the clothes line connected to two posts.
Fig. 2 is a front view on a larger scale of the combined pulley and cleat attachment; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 2.
A represents the clothes line which may carry at one end a sister-hooks B, or any other convenient attaching device by means of which that end of the clothes line may be connected to a staple or eye C, fast to the post D. V
I do not claim any invention in the means of securing the end a of the clothes line, except I prefer to use a suitable device by means of which this end may be conveniently attached to or removed from any convenient support, such as the post D, the side of a house, or any other suitable or convenient support.
The free end a of the clothes line passes over the pulley F, journaled on the pin 7 extending between the jaws c of the bracket E. This bracket comprises a fiat base 6 perforated, as at 0, to receive wood screws g, nails, or the like, by means of which the said bracket may be secured to any suitable support, such as the post D, or to the side of a house, fence, a tree, or the like.
This bracket E is cast integral with the transversely disposed cleat E, whose arms 6 are preferably substantially parallel to the axis of the pulley F, and the central portion 6 of this cleat forms a bridge to stiffen and strengthen the jaws of the bracket in which the shaft f of the pulley F is mounted.
The free end a of the clothes line is rove over the pulley F and down between. the cleat E and the'base plate 6 of the bracket E, as shown in Fig. 3, and this free end is then secured to the cleat as shown in Fig. 1. By releasing the line from the cleat, and easing up on the same, and then fastening it at the proper position, the clothes line may be lowered to be conveniently reached by the attendant, or when in the lowered position it may be conveniently hauled taut and secured as shown in Fig. 1.
When not in use the clothes line may be removed from exposure to the elements by simply withdrawing the free end a past the pullgjy F and releasing the hooks B from the eye It will be seen that I provide a cheap, simple and eflicient device which will enable a single length of line only to be used, and will permit the line to be raised or lowered, as desired, and also to be conveniently removed entirely from its supports when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Clothes line fastening and adjusting means, comprising a bracket having a base plate adapted to be secured to a supporting member, jaws projecting from said base plate, a cleat transversely disposed relative to and spanning said jaws connecting same together, and a pulley journaled between said jaws, substantially as described.
2. Clothes line fastening and adjusting means, comprising a bracket having a flat base plate perforated to permit the insertion of fastening means for securin same to a supporting member, jaws projecting at right angles to said base plate, a cleat mounted transversely to and spanning said jaws and made integral with said jaws and said base plate, and a pulley journaled between said jaws, substantially as described.
