Be it known that we, GEORGE H. SIE- nncnnn and WILLIAM F. Srnnnonnn, citizens of the United States, residing at city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Endless-Pulley-Line Constructions. of which the following is a specification.

Endless pulley line constructions employed in the handling of clothes from wall openings, as at present constructed employ two pulleys arranged at a distance from each other, and one being mounted on the wall of the opening, an endless line extending around the pair of pulleys.

Our present invention relates to an endless pulley line construction which normally extends between distant points, one adjacent to the wall opening and which may be operatively extended inwardly through the opening when it is desired to position articles thereon or remove articles therefrom, enabling the operator to move the line easily and with but little strain or effort, and further enabling the operator to assume a safe standing position at one side of the opening preferably within the room.

The principal objects of the invention are to provide in connection with an endless pulley line construction an arm mounting one of the supporting pulleys, the arm being capable of swinging at one end through an opening without materially affecting the tautness of the line; provide slack line takeup members adapted to cooperate with the line on the adjustment of the arm; to provide means for locking the arm in adjusted position relative to the opening, and in general to provide a pulley line construction by use of which the operator is enabled to stand erect within a room while hanging articles on or removing articles from a line extending through the room opening, which line is adapted to be swung exteriorly of the room opening when it is desired to close the opening.

With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form; proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be re sorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

To more fully comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the pre ferred embodiment of our invention.

Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section of a window opening illustrating the arm fulcrumed to one edge of the window opening and extending therethrough, dotted lines indicating the position of the arm when swung outwardly through the openmg.

Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section of a window opening, illustrating the parts in a position similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a view in detailed elevation of a bracket, particularly illustrating the line take-up members.

Fig. 5 is a view in detailed side elevation of one form of yieldable hanger for the pulley at the far end of the endless line.

Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawings, 1 indicates the wall formed with an opening 2, illustrated as a window opening and provided with casing 3 and sashes 4 adapted for movement to control passage through the opening.

Secured to the outer face of the wall at one edge of the opening by suitable attaching members 5 is the base 6 of a bracket, the end of which projects inwardly beyond the free edge of the opening and is formed with a horizontally disposed segmental flange 7 and a bearing flange 8 in spaced relation, one above the other. Ful'crumed to swing between flanges 7 and 8 on a vertical axis about a bearing pin 9 passing through said flanges 7 and 8, is one end of an arm 10 of any suitable length. The arm on its free end mounts through a universal joint connection 11 of any suitable construction in line mounting pulley 12 around which passes the flexible line 13, the said line also passing around a pulley 14 mounted at a distance from the wall 1 preferably on a fixed support 15. If desirable a yieldable take-up mounting 16 may be interposed between the pulley 14 and its mounting, the construction illustrated being the form of a coiled spring. The terminal ends of the pin 9 are illustrated'as mounting, one above the flange 8 and one below the flangeipsuitable grooved sheaves or line take-up members 17 and 18, and cooperating with the member 18 is a line retaining hook 19. To retain the arm 10 in its desired positionabout the fulcrum pin 9 any suitableform of releasable lock construction may be employed, that illustrated consisting in a locking pin 20 removably mounted in a vertical recess 21' in the arm above the segmental flange 7, with its lower end adapted for extending into one of a series of apertures QQformed within said segmentalflange.

The parts or their equivalents being assembled as in the drawings the device operates in the following manner;

Wheh the operator desires to hang articles on or remoive articles from the line it is only necessary that the pin 20 be raised from the locking openings and that the arm 10-be swung about the pin'9 so that the free end thereof will pass through the opening and'the major portion of the arm will 'extend inwardly through the window opening into the room. During this operation the lower flight of the endless pulley line which passes. between the hook 19 and the take-up member'18 as in Fig. 4 is released and the line is permitted to hang slightly loose between the pulleys. When the operator has finished, the pin'20 is again released and each flight of line is, positioned over its respective tal'ce up'member 17 or 18 and the arm 10 is swung outwardly through the opening and islocked preferablyin the dotted line position, Figs. 2 and 3. It will be observed that gin this movement the members 17 and 18 serve as fulcrums for the upper and lowerflights of the line and preclude the line from slacking when the free end of the arm is swung toward the stationary or far pulley. i
